George Daniel “Dan” Doughton, 86
March 07, 2025
George Daniel “Dan” Doughton, 86, of Lititz, passed away on March 7, 2025. Born in Alexandria, VA, he was the son of the late Frank P. Doughton, Sr. and Mary (Bradshaw) Doughton. He was married to his beloved wife Joan (Gigl) Doughton for 63 years.
Dan attended Mount Vernon High School. He enlisted in the US Navy and after 23 years of service, Dan was honorably discharged as Chief Warrant Officer 2. Dan received many awards in the Navy, including a voluntary appointment at the White House. After retiring from the Navy, Dan worked at Burnham Corporation for over 20 years. He was a devout Catholic, a member of the Knights of Columbus, an extraordinary minister, and a long-time member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church where he was a regular volunteer, including at weekly bingo. An avid golfer, he was a club member at Four Seasons, enjoyed being outdoors fishing and hunting, played fast-pitch softball in the Navy and slow-pitch softball in a church league with his son, was a lifetime Washington football fan, and enjoyed tending to and sitting in his garden, sharing his love of model trains with family, and traveling, especially taking road trips on his Harley Davidson with his soul mate Joan hanging on tight. Dan was an extremely devoted husband, cherished his time with family, especially his grandkids, and always put his family first. For many years, with his son Mike as sous chef, he cooked breakfast to order every Sunday for the whole family after church. Determined to live life on his own terms despite facing challenges from Parkinson’s, Dan persevered by staying active, regularly walking almost 20,000 steps a day, working out with a personal trainer and with a group of friends who also had Parkinson’s, and participating in a fitness drumming group. He will be remembered as a kind, compassionate gentleman and family man, and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his wife, Dan is survived by 4 children: Tracy Artus (Bob), Lynn Fasnacht (Tom), Michael Doughton (Pam), and Colleen Ward (Patrick); 8 grandchildren: Heather (Justin), Kyle (Annie), Bob (Erin), Amanda, Zach (Megan), Alex, Allison (Andrew), and Paige (Matt); 5 great-grandchildren: Brigham, Ellis, Scarlett, Noah, and Millie, and 2 more on the way. He was predeceased by 2 siblings, Nancy Hillyer and Frank “Page” Doughton, Jr., and grandson Adam Bricker.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM on Friday, April 4, 2025, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 558 W. Walnut St, Lancaster, PA 17603. The family will receive guests on Thursday, April 3, 2025, from 6-8 PM at Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543. The Rosary will be recited at 7:30 PM. There will be visitation at the church from 10 AM until Mass. Interment will be at St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery.

Louise and I want to express our deepest sympathies to the Doughton families for thier loss. We had the pleasure of meeting and living with Dan and Joan here at LH. He devoted his life to Joan, his family, his country and his faith and it was visible in the way he lived. He has left a tremendous legacy to his family and he will live forever in all of our memories.
RIP Dan. Thank you for your service.

Dan was my leading chief and best friend for several years in the USN. Dan was a dedicated family man and he loved his country. I have never known a better man. YES he was dedicated to his wife Joan and family. I traveled with Dan a couple times on Temporary Duty. He was the same away from the base as when he was aboard. Our wives were also close friends . My wife never learned to swim. So once while Dan and I were on Temp Duty Joan taught my wife to swim, we have never forgotten that either. I was hoping to see Dan once more here on earth, but I know his life, and he is now in a better place, awaiting his family to arrive. The family is in our prayers.

What a beautiful life story! I’m sure he will be sadly missed, but the pain of loss in your heart equates to the love for him that you have shared, which tells the story. You will see him again, until then keep the memories close.
