Genevieve M. Diller, 97

Genevieve M Diller, 97, passed away peacefully on Sunday March 11, 2012, surrounded by loving family, at the Hospice of Lancaster County.  She was the daughter of the late Elizabeth (Reese) Mann and Jacob K. Mann.  She was the wife of the late Paul R. Diller, her husband of 66 years.

Genevieve led a rich life of civic leadership and volunteering.  She was involved in numerous community activities, such as the Occupational Development Center where she was the first woman to hold the position of president of the agency’s Board of Directors.

For a number of years, she served as president of the Board of the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic.  Genevieve was the first speech therapist in the clinic’s staff and donated free time after her regular job to work with clinic patients.

Mrs. Diller was named Woman of the Year in 1958 by the Lancaster County Chapter of Penn State Alumni Club.  In 1967, she was honored for her services, being included in the annual biographical compilation of "Outstanding Civic Leaders of America".  She is a past president of the Dollars for Scholars Scholarship Foundation of Lancaster County and has been associated with the Hearing Conservation Center, Lancaster Day Nursery, YWCA, Women’s Symphony Association of the Lancaster College Club, the Lancaster Branch of American Association of University Women and Friends of the Library.

The former Genevieve Mann, she was a native of Lancaster and a graduate of Stevens High School. She earned her bachelors degree from Millersville State College and her Master’s degree in speech therapy from Penn State University.

She taught for four years at George Washington Elementary School and was a speech therapist for the school district.

In 1946, she and her husband bought Brookside Twin Pools which she operated for 25 years.

Genevieve was an avid swimmer, reader, and entertainer.  She traveled extensively with her husband throughout the United States and around the world.  She enjoyed reading her Kindle and playing scrabble and cards with her many friends at Woodcrest Villa where she lived since 1998.

She is survived by daughter Elizabeth (Biffie) and son in law Barney Kelly and their two sons Chris and Robbie of Phoenix, AZ. and by son Dan Diller and his wife Dot Polito of Lancaster. She was preceded in death by sister Miriam Metzler.

Dear Biffie, Dan and family,
We never saw Genny without that luminous smile on her face! As you know, Gerry and I became friends with Genny and Paul after moving into the big stone house back in 1985. We continued that friendship after their move to Woodcrest Villa and saw Genny several times a year after Paul’s death. We are so grateful to have known them both and very grateful that we both had a chance to have a nice visit with Genny just before Valentine’s Day this year. We will surely miss her! With our love and deep condolences…

To the Diller Family:

On behalf of all the Beck family, you have our deepest sympathy on the passing to eternal life of Mrs. Diller who was such a warm and gracious lady. She and Mr Diller were a fixture in all our lives during all the wonderful summers spent at their fantastic Brookside. We will always remember all the fun they provided and all their interest in our lives.
May you find comfort and solace in all your treasured memories, and may she rest in peace forever.
Love,
Kathleen "Kippy" Beck and all the Becks

My deepest Sympathy.
I enjoyed taking care of your Mother over the years. I was so impressed reading her list of accomplishments and understood why I liked or so much. Her love of people and community was obvious when I talked with her.
I only regret not having the opportunity to replace her knees and restore her mobility.
Cherish the memories and you will be in my thoughts and prayers
Dr. Gerald Rothacker

Dear Dan, Biffie, and family:

Gennie’s passing took me by surprise, yet as I thought of her…a broad smile replaced the sadness I was feeling.  Your mother was a special Scrabble companion to my mother – they shared years of games together and even drew me into a few of their matches.  I sometimes felt as though I was being hustled by two "word sharks."  But I held my own against them!

Your mother lived life so graciously, serving as an inspiration to my mother, to me, and to all of those whose lives she so obviously touched.  I feel privileged to have known her.

Dear Dan and Biffie,
I was so sad, and a bit surprised to read your mother’s obituary yesterday, and of course our thoughts are with you. Dan will remember that I got to see her last fall at a Citizens’ Scholarship event which I attended primarily because I knew she would be there. We will always remember that she, Harry Brian and my father were some sort of "triplets," having been born on the same day in 1914. We enjoyed so many happy days at Brookside, and Gennie was always smiling, no matter when or where I ran into her over the years. What a great role model.
Sincerely,
Linda Lestz Weidman

Dan, Biffy,  and  family,
Thinking  of  you  at  this  sad  time.  Mrs.  Diller  will  be  remembered  by  many.  She  was  a  great  lady.  Am  glad  that  I  saw  her  at  two  happy  events  recently.
Sincerely,
Rick  Atwater

Mrs. Diller, as I called her for years, was my first speech therapist and life long friend.  I remember fondly those early years at the clinic, the fun times at Brookside and most recently our lunches at her apartment.  She was such a special lady and dear friend to me and my mother.  I was so sorry to read of her passing as I had last seen her just before Christmas and she was doing so well.  I am so sorry I did not know she had been moved to Hospice.  I will miss her.  My condolences to Biffy, her family and Dan.

"Aunt Gennie", as she was known to the Metzler family, captured the essence of a life well lived. We enjoyed each and every visit with Aunt Gennie and Uncle Paul since as long as we can remember; whether as little kids at Brookside, or at the "Barn" house, or in Florida, or more recently at Woodcrest Villa. As I read through her many professional accomplishments, her humbleness and generosity also came to mind. I have been so personally blessed, not only was she my great Aunt, but also my Godmother. She had a way of always make anyone feel extra special when with they were with her, such a wonderful trait. As much as I will miss Aunt Gennie’s presence on earth, I am happy she is reunited with Uncle Paul and I will look forward to the day I see her again in heaven.
With loving remembrance,
Margie

Dear Biffie and Dan

Genny was a wonderful lady and our Sympathy to you and your families. Mom and I were really looking forward to her 98th Birthday party and seeing your Mom again and visting with you. So disappointed she did not make it. Our parents had so many wonderful adventures together in Florida and the around the world trip. And Brookside. Wow, what wonderful memories! Brookside was the summer entertainment for the city of Lancaster for so many years.

Did not realize that your Mom taught at George Washington Elementary. Suspect that is probably where your Mom and my Dad met. (He also started out teaching there). Appreciated reading about all her community activities. She contributed so much in her lifetime.

It was great having a relationship with your family. Will always have fond memories of your Mom and Dad and our parents friendship. Again sorry we could not have celebrated her 98th Birthday together. But we will always have the memories. Our sympathy to you and your families.

Carol and Joe Friend, (Neal and Betsy)
