Born in Lewiston, NC, he was the husband of Betty Moore Burkett. They would have celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary on May 26. He was the son of the late George A. and Helen M. Jernigan Burkett.
After receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science from NC State University, Gene worked for Wayne Feeds as a district sales representative in Roanoke and Broadway, VA, then for Merial Select, and later retired from Best Veterinary Solutions. He was a Free and Accepted Mason and a member of the Zembo Shrine, Harrisburg, PA. He was a lifetime member of the Virginia Jaycees and a member of the Lititz United Methodist Church where he taught the Koinonia Sunday school class for 33 years. Gene enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and reading but most of all enjoyed going to the grandchildren’s sporting events and spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Julie E. Van Brookhoven, (wife of Jeffrey S.); Amy S. Hibshman, (wife of Eric D.); Stephanie L. Gross, (wife of Matthew R.); and Russell A. Burkett; and six grandchildren, Ashley and Aiden Gross, Samantha and Ian Van Brookhoven, Blake Burkett and Coleson Hibshman. Also surviving are two brothers, George A. Burkett, New Bern, NC; William R. Burkett, (husband of Edna), Woodland, NC and a sister, Deborah Colson, (wife of Jerry), Winterville, NC. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard A. Burkett.

To the entire beautiful Burkett family,
My heart aches for each and every single one of you since hearing of this sudden loss.  Mr. Burkett was truly influential in all the lives who were blessed enough to cross paths with such a kind and caring man.  He never missed an opportunity to shine the light of God through his love and gentleness…leaving a lasting legacy…one in which has left an impact on all the lives he touched, even way back in so many years past.  There are just simply no words enough to express my heartfelt condolences…I will continue to be praying for each one of you in the days ahead…I pray for a peace that passes all understanding, for you all to feel His love radiating down over each one of you like a thick, warm blanket of comfort and protection during these unchartered waters that you walk. I know that with your amazing faith and strength as a family that comes from Him alone above…you will all carry that beautiful legacy everywhere your path leads until that beautiful day when you can all be together again as a beautiful family…and celebrate in our forever eternal home…sharing giggles and hugs for all eternity.  Please know that you are all loved and thought of today…as well as in all the days ahead.   Love, Beth (Blough)Brown and family

Gene was a great co-worker.  He was also always a gentleman with the highest of integrity.  Gene never spoke ill of anyone, and would beam with pride when speaking of his family (which he did often).  We already missed him at Merial Select since his retirement.  My thoughts and prayers are with Betty and the rest of Gene’s family.  Well done my Good and Faithful Servant!

Gene was the friendliest and most gentle person I’ve ever known.  From the first time I met him, he always had a quick smile, showed interest in his health, asked very thoughtful questions, and was very polite to all in the office.  As his dermatologist, I’ve had a chance to visit with him many times over the years, and, when I saw his name on the list of the day’s patients, looked forward to talking to him, about family, North Carolina, and life in general.  My prayers are with his whole family.   John Legere

Gene was a kind and gentle man.  We got to know him when our son Eric married his daughter Amy.  He was a good father and grandpa.  We admire him for his faith.  We will miss him.
Our deepest sympathies for this illness that took him from his family, friends,  and community.
