G. Daniel Baughman Jr., 68
June 29, 2024
G. Daniel Baughman Jr., 68, passed away on Saturday, June 29 in Philadelphia after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of Karen Horner Baughman with whom he shared 46 years of marriage. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of G. Daniel Baughman Sr. and Elfrieda Knudsen Baughman.
Dan graduated from Solanco High School in 1974, Lock Haven University in 1978 and West Chester University in 1981. He taught physical education at Fulton Elementary in the School District of Lancaster for 19 years. In 1997, he became Athletic Director in Solanco School District where he served until his retirement in 2014. In 2010, Dan was named Lancaster-Lebanon League and District 3 Athletic Director of the Year. In 2015, Dan was inducted into Solanco School District Athletic Hall of Fame. Through the years, Dan enjoyed officiating P.I.A.A. softball games and later served as L-L League softball chairman.
Nickel Mines Swim Club was an important part of Dan’s life. He spent 50 summers at “the pool” where he taught generations of young children how to swim. He treasured the relationships with young swimmers and their families.
In his younger years, Dan enjoyed playing basketball and softball. After retirement, Dan spent most of his time at his home in Caswell Beach, North Carolina where he thoroughly enjoyed the game of golf, nightly golf cart rides with family and friends, observing wildlife and hours on the beach. He loved cheering for his North Carolina Tarheels and the Michigan Wolverines and especially loved bantering with his friends who regrettably cheered on the Nittany Lions. He appreciated every moment of retirement and especially enjoyed sharing his love of Caswell with family and friends. He was a member of Ocean View United Methodist Church on Oak Island.
Along with his beloved wife, Dan is survived by his cherished daughters Megan E. Henderson (Nathan) and Erin M. Platt (Jamie). He also leaves behind his adored grandchildren Caroline and Evan Platt. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings John K. Baughman and Cynthia Baughman Bollinger.
He was a wonderful husband, dad and grandpa who always knew how to make each day special. Every day, he demonstrated his heartfelt love for his precious family. He will be unbearably missed.
A celebration of Dan’s life will take place at Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home 2421 Willow Street Pike at 3:30 PM on August 1, 2024. Family and friends are invited to greet family from 1:30 to 3:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Solanco School District, G. Daniel Baughman Athletic Memorial Scholarship Fund, 121 South Hess Street, Quarryville, PA 17566. Checks should be made payable to Solanco School District.

Condolences to the Family

With heavy hearts we send our condolences to Karen and her entire family. We will always respectfully know him as Danny Baughman from “The Pool”. Nickel Mines Swimming Pool was our “second home” throughout our teenage years with Danny and many other friends. The pool was the best, second to none with Dan as the master helmsman guaranteeing perfection at all levels. Our continued acquaintances with Dan and Karen throughout the years were memorable, experiencing all the exceptional attributes Dan and. Karen provided the Solanco School District . We are so privileged to have known such a legendary person as Dan , and will always smile thinking of him. Regards, Randy and Cindy Davis Rapp

Mr. Baughman was a very positive figure in my life. I used to go to the pool every day in the summer when I was young. I would sit in the breezeway with him while he checked people in and we would talk about life. He would give me advice and just be a genuinely nice guy. I’m grateful for his kindness to me over the years. I will remember his friendly demenor and the clever way he could make fun of me so we would both end up laughing together. I was always happy to see Danny Baughman. My condolences to the whole family.

Dear Karen and family,
We were so sorry to hear about Dan and the illness he suffered. He was a good friend and someone I greatly admired and valued. We helped each other get through lots of adversity as athletic directors. We also shared many great moments at the state conference. He was truly a terrific guy. Jamie remembers him fondly from years at the pool, so yes, he definitely impacted our lives in the best way. All of love to you and the family.

Dear Karen, My heart goes out to you. I know how hard it is to lose the love of your life so suddenly. Dan was a good man. I and everyone at the Oak island Golf club who played golf with Dan, always enjoyed his company. He always had a smile on his face and was fun to be around. I will miss Dan as will all who knew him at Caswell Dunes and at the golf club. He was a great neighbor and friend.

Karen, Erin and Megan,
What an incredible heartache this is to the Shaw Family. At least once a month, I attempt to convey to my husband the impact Dan, the Baughman Family (and their many friends), and that pool had on our childhood(s). I’ll never forget Dan’s enthusiasm for swimming and how deeply he wanted kids to succeed. Succeed they did — so many kids excelled in athletics and beyond. Now, as an adult, I know how important that type of mentor is and boy were we lucky. What a legacy he has left. Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time. Much love, April (Shaw) O’Brien

Dan was a tremendous man. He exuded class and acceptance with everyone he met. He was a perfect fit for the athletic director, a true example of leadership, being involved in every way for every sport. The Solanco community owes a debt of gratitude to him and his wife for the efforts they put in to the district. God Speed!

A great friend for so many years who will be missed deeply. To put it simply, my life was better because Dan was part of it. I am fortunate to have many, many great memories of our times together. Yes, I am one of those Nittany Lion fans who watched many PSU and Michigan football games harassing Dan! Unfortunately, he got to celebrate many more times than I did. I am so happy that he got to experience the Michigan football national championship in 2023. I was blessed to know his parents Dan senior and “Fritz” who treated me like a son. My heart goes out to Dan’s wonderful wife, Karen, beautiful children, Megan and Erin and precious grandchildren Caroline and Evan. I hope that in time with God’s grace, the sorrow you now feel will be eased by the wonderful memories that you have of shared times together. God Bless You.
