Frederick L. “Peck” Rhinier, 85

Frederick L. “Peck” Rhinier, 85, of Pequea Township, died unexpectedly on Tuesday March 3, 2009, at Lancaster General Hospital. Born September 14, 1923, in Lancaster, he was a son of the late Howard B. and Annie Spence Rhinier. He is survived by his wife, Georgette Rittenhouse Rhinier.

Mr. Rhinier was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He retired after 45 years of employment at Armstrong. Peck was a member of the Millersville VFW and was the President of the Nickel Mines Investment Club. He proudly served our country in the United States Army’s 120th Infantry, 30th Division during World War II.

He was wounded three times during the war; a shoulder wound and shrapnel wounds in France, following D-Day and severe frostbite during the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium, when his feet and legs were frozen. He received a Purple Heart and two Oak Leaf Clusters for his service, but "you got nothing for being frozen" he would comment with a chuckle. Peck was loved by many and will be missed by all.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Rhinier is survived by two daughters: Bonnie L., wife of Richard S. Bowman of Lancaster; and Colleen A., wife of Richard A. Watson, Jr. of Lancaster; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2009, from Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, 119 South Prince Street, Lancaster at 11:00 a.m. with Father Leo Goodman as celebrant. A viewing will take place from 9-11:00 a.m. at the church. Interment will follow at Conestoga Memorial Park. Please omit flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 3544 N. Progress Ave. Harrisburg, PA 17110. Arrangements by the Charles F. Snyder, Jr. Funeral Home and Chapel. Dear Neighbor,
We shall surely miss our good neighbor. He was always there to help us at Engleside during our formative years and we shall never forget. We thank you for sharing him with us these last 26 years. America has lost another of it’s great heroes of the 20th century, a fighting soldier of WWII. My wife and I pray that our Heavenly Father and the Blessed Mother will guide the soul of your departed loved one to a place of refreshment light and peace and grant him a blessed repose.

Dearest Aunt Georgie, Bonnie and Colleen,
We were sad to read of Uncle Peck’s passing.  I will always remember his bright and warm smile and his open arms to always welcome me, whenever we ran into the two of you.  Also, I recall his happiness when we decided to name our son, Fred.  I was so hoping to come to the service or at least the sharing before, however, my Jim has started to come down with this virus, and I need to get him an appointment in the morning with a doctor.  But know that my thoughts and prayers are with all of you.  I will remember you in my prayers, I know Uncle Peck is 100% and will continue watching over you just as he always did.  Mom sends her condolences and was sad to hear the news and says she will remember you as well.  It has been six years since she lost my stepfather.  Take care and God Bless.
Love Trudy and Jim
