Evelyn Walter Richards, 86

August 7, 1929 - October 24, 2015

Evelyn Walter Richards entered into the presence of the Lord quietly at home on Saturday, October 24, 2015, with her beloved husband of 66 years, Tyler C. Richards, Jr., by her side. She was born on August 7, 1929, in Spring Lake, New Jersey, and lived her early childhood years at the Jersey shore. Her family then moved to South Orange, New Jersey, where she met and married her high school sweetheart on November 6, 1948. Evelyn was a homemaker until all five of her children were in school. She was the Program Director at the YWCA in Orange, NJ, and later became Director of Admissions at Northeastern Bible College. Evelyn earned her B.A. in Biblical Literature from Northeastern, and her M.S. in Counseling Services from Upsala College. Evelyn and Tyler came to faith in Jesus Christ in the 1960s, which sustained them through the loss of their son Gordon in 1971.

Evelyn and Tyler opened their hearts and home to family and friends for Sunday dinners, rich fellowship, and conversations about the Lord. She had a unique way of listening to and encouraging people of all ages. She loved her children and husband, through great achievements and celebrations, losses and disappointments, always grateful for God’s goodness.

Evelyn is survived by her husband, Tyler Curtis Jr., her children and spouses, Tyler Curtis III (Barbara), Holly Orgo (Joseph), Christian Frederick (Kimberly), Caryl Roper (Scott), and thirteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Rd, Lancaster with Rev. George May officiating. Friends and family will be received from 6 to 9 PM Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at the church, and again one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Burial will be at 1:00 PM Thursday, October 29, 2015 at Bloomfield Cemetery, Bloomfield, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Evelyn’s honor may be made to the Gordon W. Richards Scholarship Fund at Chosen People Ministries, 241 E. 51st St., New York, NY 10022.

Condolences to the Family

Mom, today I have the chance to sit quietly at home and enjoy thinking about you. It is almost astonishing to me that, as I look back on our long and loving relationship, I realize I have definitely experienced the abundant life that is promised to those who are in Christ.  And when I picture you now, filled with complete joy in Heaven with the Lord Jesus, my sadness is turned into gladness as I rejoice with you.  I know it sounds surprising but I feel like I’m being pulled into your joy rather than pulling you into my sadness. Only God can transform our sorrow into a joy that overtakes us.
I will cry often as I miss your presence here, but I will never be anything but glad that you are now Home with Him.  I picture you with Gordon and your mom, Nana Walter.  And I say again, like I said the last time I saw you and held your face in my hands, “the Lord watch between me and thee while we are absent one from the other.”
“Bye for now,” with love from your daughter, Holly Beth

Dear Ty,
Please know that the thoughts and prayers of the Market Street Mission are with you as you part (for a time) from Evelyn.  May God hold you in the palm of HIS hand as you walk into the future.  We are with you in spirit.

To Evelyn’s Family and Friends,
I was one of those whose life was touched by knowing Evelyn. We met at Upsala College when I was in my mid twenties and my life was changed forever. She will always hold a special place in my heart. God bless you all.
Thoughts and prayer,

Evelyn will be missed very much by her friends for her sharp mind and love for the Lord and His word. I was always impressed by her desire to know more about God and also her love for the Jewish people and desire to see them come to their Lord. Our condolences to Ty and the rest of the family, and encouragement that we will see her again.

Mom, everyone who spent any time with you is a better person for having done it.  You radiated the grace and love of the Savior that you loved so much and made everyone feel like they were the only person that mattered.  You taught me the importance of ferocious love of family and you were the first person to make me believe that I had something to offer the world.  I’ll miss the great talks, Tuesday night dinners and over-serving you ice cream which you swore you couldn’t finish 🙂
Most of all, we’ll take the baton now and try to carry on the legacy of love and hospitality that you modeled so beautifully for us. Hopefully, I passed the “white glove test.”
For now, enjoy Jesus and make the preparations for when we’ll all sit down again and have a hoot at the wedding feat of the Lamb (we’ll be the table that all laughs together).
Scott
