Ella Mae “Sue” (Weaver) Hershey

Ella Mae “Sue” (Weaver) Hershey almost 100, of Brethren Village, formerly of West Lampeter Township joined her husband Richard “Digger Dick” Hershey and her daughter Barbara (Hershey) Myer in Heaven on September 13, 2018. She was born in West Lampeter Township on November 1, 1918 to B. Ellis and Ella (Houser) Weaver. She and her husband Dick celebrated their 64th anniversary on June 12, 2007. Dick died on December 1, 2007.

Ella Mae was a 1937 graduate of West Lampeter Township High School and a 1942 graduate of Millersville Teachers College where she played the trumpet in the marching band. She was an English teacher for four years but preferred being a homemaker and bookkeeper for her husband’s excavating business.

A charter member of the Church of the Apostles, UCC she was previously a member of St Paul’s United Church of Christ where she taught Sunday school. She was an active member of Farm Women Society 18 for more than 50 years. She was a dedicated and long term volunteer at Conestoga View. She and her husband delivered for Meals on Wheels for many years. Ella Mae and Dick enjoyed traveling to the Holy Lands and the contiguous 48 States. They loved attending Penn State Football games with their son and his wife for nearly 20 years. We estimated that Ella Mae was an annual patron of the Jigger Shop at Mount Gretna for more than 85 years including her 99th year.

She is survived by a son Robert M. and his wife Mary T. Hershey of State College, son-in-law Robert Myer of West Lawn, five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, husband, and daughter, she was preceded in death by her sisters Helen Weaver, Mary Brown, Mildred Mayer, and M. Elizabeth Brown.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Celebration of Ella Mae’s Life on Saturday, November 3 at Noon, at the Church of the Apostles, United Church of Christ, 1850 Marietta Ave. Lancaster, PA 17603 with Rev. Kathryn Kuhn officiating. Visitation will be from 10:30 to 11:30 am. A light lunch will be served after the service at the Church Hall. Interment will be private at Longeneckers Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice & Community Care, P.O. Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604 or Church of the Apostles, UCC.

I was a neighbor of Mrs. Hershey, her son Bobby and I were good friends, we used to wrestle in the basement in there house, Mrs. Hershey was always friendly and smiling, I used to get upset when ever we had a snowstorm, Mr. Hershey,( Digger Dick) would start using his snowplow, and I thought that would keep our school from closing, lol.
