Elizabeth G. “Betty” Gillespie, 92

May 14, 2017

Elizabeth G. “Betty” (Urick) Gillespie, 92, of Lititz and formerly of Shamokin, died peacefully May 14, 2017, at Lancashire Hall, Lancaster.
Born June 29, 1924 in Shamokin, she was predeceased in 1969 by her husband Robert F. Gillespie of Paxinos, PA. She was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Supsic) Urick.
Betty was a homemaker living in Shamokin and later moved to Paxinos with her husband who was an owner-operator truck driver. She loved traveling, camping, and trips to the ocean with her family and later her grandchildren. She worked for Mr. Red Clark’s Poultry, Brumbach Auction, Split Vein Coal Company and Mountain View Manor. Betty always had a passion to take care of people and worked as a private care giver for many people after her retirement. Her grandchildren were the light of her life and she reveled in every achievement they attained.
Betty was a member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church, Shamokin, St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Sunbury, and after moving to Lancaster County to be near her son’s family, St. John Neumann Catholic Church, Lancaster.
Survivors include her two sons, Gregory R, married to the former Cynthia Clark; and Bert T., married to the former Kim Hopper; 8 grandchildren: Gregory Gillespie II (Jackie Fuentes), Nicole Oberrender (Emmett), Megan Gillespie (Grant Williams), Julia Kroesen (Justin), Michael Gillespie, Donielle Hopper, Kelly Gillespie and Katie Gillespie; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In her later years, Betty developed close friendships with her caregivers at Lancashire Hall and they will be fondly remembered by her family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM Thursday, May 18, 2017 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 601 E. Delp Rd., Lancaster, PA 17601 with the Rev. Dan Powell as Celebrant. Friends will be received one half hour prior to the mass at the church. Burial will be private.

Dear Greg and Bert, I was so sorry to hear about your mother’s death. She was such a great lady and she taught my mom how to drive when my dad gave up on her.  I always asked about Betty when I ran into Sherri while shopping at Bader’s.  I often think of our early years on Market St and recently moved back into my childhood home @ 539 South when my mother passed away in the fall.  I remember your grandmother at Farmer’s Market, too.  Please accept my sincere sympathy, Sally Sobotor

Our families had some great times together.  Betty and I were close for so many years before she moved away.  Cindy wants me to include her in wishing you and your families our sincere sympathy.     Jeanne Klinger and Cindy(Klinger)Mirillo.

Dear Greg and Bert,  I was so sorry to see your mothers passing in the paper today.  My thoughts and prayers are with you. So may memories flooded my mind as I looked at her picture.  We had the best of times growing up on Market St. as baby boomers!  Remember playing “sesspool” in your basement?  No video games back in the day, we created our own!  Many picnics at state parks as well.  May God bless all of you at this very sad time and my wish is that she is now on a beach somewhere with your dad and the camp fire burning!  Much love to both of you!  Kathy {Klinger} Kufta
