Eileen Wallace Zaledonis
August 22, 2025
Eileen Wallace Zaledonis, a lifelong educator whose passion for learning touched generations of students, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2025, at Moravian Manor Communities, after making her home in East Hempfield Township for 48 years. She will be remembered for her intellect, keen sense of humor, and the time she gave so generously to family, friends, and students alike.
Eileen is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Edward Zaledonis; her daughters, Ellen (Kevin) Milligan of Lititz, PA, and Lynne Zaledonis (Boris Bakovic) of San Francisco, CA; and her cherished grandchildren, Maeve and Griffin Milligan. She is also survived by her sister, Mary (Wallace) Love of Woodbury, NJ. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dawson and Miriam Wallace; her brother, Bart Wallace; and her sister, Dee Burrs.
A lifelong learner, Eileen attended Gettysburg College, where she majored in French and studied abroad in France. She went on to earn a master’s degree in French from Middlebury College. Later, she earned a master’s degree in Education from Millersville University and completed certification as a Reading Recovery Specialist from Ohio State University.
Her career reflected that same dedication to learning. She began by teaching French before joining Lititz Elementary School as a reading specialist, where she taught for 20 years and became a beloved member of the Lititz community. She also mentored future educators as a supervisor for the Millersville University Reading Clinic program for graduate students. In addition, she served as an adjunct professor in the Best Clinic master’s program. Beyond the classroom, she advanced education as a board member of Lancaster Dollars for Higher Learning and as an officer for the Lancaster-Lebanon Reading Council.
Eileen found joy in her personal pursuits, especially time spent with her grandchildren, daily walks, and her lifelong love of reading. She was known for her wit and active social life, treasuring her many circles of friends. In her younger years, she sewed her daughters’ clothes, canned local produce, and delivered Meals on Wheels. She was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Coterie group.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Moravian Manor Communities for their compassionate care. Above all, Eileen leaves behind a legacy of love, learning, and laughter.
A memorial service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church on October 25th. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations in Eileen’s memory to Lancaster Dollars for Higher Learning at lancdollars.org/make-a-donation, or by mail at 313 W. Liberty Street, #343, Lancaster, PA 17603.
