Edward “Big Ed” J. Golden, Jr., 77
October 23, 2020
Edward “Big Ed” J. Golden, Jr. 77, of Lancaster, passed away on Friday, October 23, 2020 at Hospice and Community Care. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Caroline (Mansolino) and Edward J. Golden, Sr. He was the loving husband of Roberta “Bobbi” (Gromling) with whom he shared almost 54 years of marriage.
Ed graduated from St. Joseph Prep in Philadelphia in 1960. He made lifelong friends there and he credited it as the pillar of his education. He then went on to graduate from LaSalle University where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Management. He was a proud US Veteran, serving in the Army National Guard.
Ed was employed by East Stroudsburg University as the Assistant Director of the Computer Center. He then went on to enjoy a 29-year career at the Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit -13 finishing his career as the Human Resources Director. He and Bobbi are members of St. John Neumann Catholic Church. Ed also volunteered as a Eucharistic Minister and in the religious education center at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. For over 10 years after he retired Ed volunteered as the Coordinator for the Youth Aid Panel for the Manheim Township Police Department. He was also a former member of the East Hempfield Lions Club.
Ed’s booming voice and colorful stories never failed to entertain and are sure to be remembered by his many friends and acquaintances. He was an avid Philadelphia sports fan and never failed to provide an opinion on the current state of the Eagles, Phillies and Flyers. He and Bobbi enjoyed traveling throughout the US and Europe, visiting Rocky Mountain National Park every year to snowshoe. Ed truly loved to celebrate his Irish heritage and visited Ireland numerous times. While Michelle and Michael were growing up Ed and his family spent numerous summers combing the beach at Wildwood New Jersey. Ed enjoyed life to the fullest, was proud of his beautiful family, and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
In addition to his wife, Bobbi, Ed is survived by two children: Michelle E. Stoudt, wife of John of Lancaster and Michael E. Golden, husband of Shandra N. Frey of Cedar City, UT.; 1 grandson, Liam, a brother Thomas J. Golden of Philadelphia and 2 granddogs: Uly and Carmella.
Due to the current COVID-19 situation, a private service was held at St. John Neumann Catholic Church and interment followed at St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery. Ed’s family looks forward to sharing stories at his Celebration of Life which will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that you send a contribution in Ed’s memory to Hospice and Community Care, 685 Good Drive, Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604.

I just learned of Ed’s passing. I got to know Ed in the early 1980’s, when I began my career at EHTPD and he resided in Centerville. We became friends and I always looked forward to seeing him when the Greaseband was in town. He never failed to provide the humor in any situation! I was on his e-mail joke list and he constantly delivered. Since he retired, we would occassionally meet for lunch and catch up on our life happenings. I will certainly miss his wit!
My condolences to Bobbi, Michelle, Mike, and the rest of his family. RIP, Ed.

Ed and I were classmates at the PREP. We lost touch as I moved to the Albany New York area. We got back in touch via Facebook. We shared an appreciation of good beer, although I think ed had a deeper appreciation. His last facebook post was his entry into the Hospice Program. He left with grace. RIP fellow Prepper.

I had the privilege of knowing Ed during the time that I was Superintendent of Schools in the Lampeter-Strasburg School District and he was working at IU13. A ready smile and a friendly word were his trademarks. I thoroughly enjoyed my contacts with Ed. Just his name makes me smile. My condolences on the loss of a good and caring guy.

Dear Bobbie, Mike and Michelle,
Ed was a coworker and roommate of mine. He was one of my oldest and best friends, always the life of the party. He remembered everything (unfortunately). He loved the three of you. He will be missed by us all.
My deepest sympathy,
Jim

Dear Bobbi,
I am so sorry to hear of Ed’s passing. My deepest sympathies to you and your family.
Ed was such a wonderful man, kind and caring wiht such a great sense of humor.
He was a great colleague at IU 13 and so good in handling sensitive issues. I was lucky to have worked with him. I last saw him at one of the MIllersville University alumni events. My husband was a Millersville alum, I think they were in the same class. You may not know that my husband passed away in January 2019.
Please extend my sympathy to all of your family.
With Kindest Regards,
Linda Rhen

Ed was our Police liason for our Youth Aid Panel, and as a panel Chairperson, I was in constant contact with him. Although he was a volunteer, he took his role seriously, and I had complete confidence in him. His committment and professionalism, along with just being a great guy, made my role so much easier. From the day he retired, his absence was felt, and he was never fully replaced. Ed was a gentleman and a class act, the likes of which are so very hard to come by. Both as personal, and as a representative of Manheim Township Youth Aid Panel, may I extend our deepest sympathies for your loss. He will always be remembered by us.

Mrs Golden, Mike and Michelle,
So sorry to here about your dad. Sitting here thinking about some great memories. The nights our parents played countless hours of cards, him yelling on the sideline of the soccer games or yelling at Mike and I in you back yard because we were more then likely doing something wrong and oh how he could tell a story. And how could forget all the times at the pool and him and all the dads trying to hang with the young guys on the basketball or volleyball courts and more then one of the old guys would come off the court limping or hurt in some way. Again, so sorry for your loss and hope you and your families are doing well.
Our thoughts are with you,
Bill

To the Golden family, relatives and friends,
I had the pleasure of knowing Ed during our days at St. Joseph’s (“the Prep).” Many years later I was employed as a visiting Finance faculty at Franklin & Marshall College. Ed learned of my F&M affiliation via the Prep. We had a wonderful luncheon, reminisced, and caught up on our respective careers.
May God bless and keep Ed in His heavenly arms during your period of mourning and Ed’s transition to God’s heavenly kingdom.

Our deepest sympathy to Bobbi and her family. We knew Ed and his family through all of our children attending in the Hempfield School District. But mostly at the Landisville Pool. We would be playing basketball, volleyball and even toss horeshoes. He always had a smile and fun to be around. He will be missed. Great guy and a wonderful family.
