Edward B. Kahler, Jr., 97

February 03, 2017

Edward B. Kahler, Jr., 97, of Conestoga, PA, passed away on Friday, February 3, 2017.
He was the husband of the late Mary Ellen Copeland Kahler, who passed away in 2007. Born in Millersville, he was the son of the late Edward B., Sr. and Georgia M. Allen Kahler.
A very talented artist, Ed was a sign painter and gold leaf artist, owning Kahler Signs, working from the time of his return from World War II until he was 87.
He was a US Army Air Corps veteran, serving in England as a supply staff sergeant but his talent as an artist led him to designing and painting nose art on American bombers.
Ed was physically fit, a great swimmer and was still lifting weights and doing Tai Chi until just recently. He loved bad puns, and was a fan of old silent films featuring Charlie Chaplin and Fred Astaire. He also loved his cat, Edith.
Ed is survived by his children: Edward B. III married to Patricia Kahler of Conestoga, Betsy married to Chris Pederson of Lancaster, and Chris Kahler of Baltimore, MD; his 3 grandchildren: Graham E. and Ian S. Kahler, and Nina Pederson; and by his sister, Frances Hershey of Millersville. He was preceded in death by his 3 brothers: Robert E, Norman, and John Kahler.
Friends will be received on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 from 1-2PM at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 441 N. George St., Millersville, PA, with the Funeral Service to follow at 2PM. Interment in Millersville Mennonite Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Ed’s memory to the Lancaster County SPCA, 848 S. Prince St., Lancaster, PA 17603.

Condolences to the Family

Im sorry to hear of his passing. I am a daughter of his brother John who passed away 25 yrs ago. I didnt even know he had a brother still around or in the area. If I would have known I would have liked to get to know his family. Reading the obituary he was a great and talented man!  I pray for peace in his family and that he is now in Heaven with his Heavenly Father and family. My sincere condolences to all.

I first met Ed Kahler while he was employeed at Holder Advertising in Lancaster,Pa. Me, I was an aspiring young sign painter working for the Dorwart Sign Co. also in Lancaster, learning as much as I could & earning a few bucks. I would drive to Holder Advertising during my lunch hour just to watch & talk to Ed, observing & absorbing his talent. He was a master at his craft & I was learning so much during our visits. Fast forward to his shop on Fulton Street, a place I would visit anytime I was in Lancaster, just to watch the master at work, usually working on some Dutch Wonderland signage. We did get to work together on some of his harder jobs – lettering the brick wall at James & Lemon Streets, been painted over since then, to gold leafing a restored fire engine for Washington Boro Fire Company & Quarryville Fire Company’s newly acquired tanker truck, and other creative signs.
I am honored to have had Ed Kahler as my friend & my mentor. He will be missed. To the Kahler family, my thoughts are with you all. God speed, Ed Kahler!

Chris – I never knew your father, but I certainly know you.  To this day, I often think about our time working together at WLYH-TV, in the late 80’s & early 90’s.  My guess is that your creativity, good nature, sense of humor and calm demeanor are directly attributable to your dad.  While it has been a long time since we have seen one another, I am certain that none of that has changed.
Please know that Mindy and I will be thinking of you and your family on Wednesday.  Strength and love, my friend.
