Edith Grace Yoffe Golin

March 19, 2013

Edith Grace Yoffe Golin, beloved mother of Jonathan and David, died on the evening of Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at Hospice & Community Care, Essa Flory Center at the age of 83 from a cerebral haemorrhage. She was the wife of Charles Golin, who passed away in 2007, also aged 83.

The only child of the late Jennie Hoffman Yoffe, of Lancaster, and Louis Yoffe, of Palmyra, Edith was born August 14, 1929 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. On the death of her father when Edith was 5, she moved with her mother back to Lancaster, and graduated from McCaskey High School in 1947. After graduation, she completed a two-year secretarial program in New York City, and subsequently worked for Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. In 1950, she moved back to Lancaster to marry Charles.

Edith was a dedicated mother and grandmother, who doted on her grandson Ethan. After the birth of her first child, she also volunteered at Lancaster General Hospital. When her younger son David was born in 1958 with cerebral palsy, Edith became his devoted caregiver, assisting in and recruiting other caregivers to perform the intensive Doman-Delacato patterning regime, as prescribed by The Institutes for The Achievement of Human Potential in Philadelphia.  After David’s graduation from college and his moving to Harrisburg to work for the Pennsylvania Developmental Disabilities Council, Edith helped her husband Charles begin a mid-life second career in law. For fifteen years, she worked at the former offices of Golin, Haefner and Bacher on East King Street as a secretary and office administrator.

Known for her sense of humor, Edith was a loyal friend as well as a faithful companion to her late husband, frequently accompanying him on boating trips in the Chesapeake Bay.  She stayed close to friends from her childhood and her early adult years even when they moved away from the area. Edith loved to drive and was quick to hop in her car to meet a friend for lunch, go shopping or journey long distances to look after a child or visit family.  She also loved to travel, although she did not get to do so as much as she might have liked, and she was an inveterate reader.

Increasingly frail following the death of her husband in 2007, Edith moved into Brethren Village in 2010, where she was looked after by caregivers who became like family to her in her last years and where she enjoyed a high quality of life until stricken by the illness that took her life ten days later.  She is survived by sons, Jonathan Golin, husband of Suzanna, and grandson, Ethan of East Grinstead, England and David Golin of Harrisburg; her mother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mazie Ford of Hallandale, FL and Johann Golin Levinson of Pompano Beach, FL; and cousins, Florence Bellack of Lancaster and Julia Welber of York.

Edith was a member of Temple Beth El and active member of its sisterhood for many years.

Your Mother was a lovely lady I got to know when I was Clerk of the Courts 1984-1992.  We spent time chatting when she was waiting for your Dad or for some document from another office.  She was someone very special and kind.
I hope that the sorrow you must feel will subside as you remember how fortunate you were to have such loving parents.  Sincere condolences,

David—I read of your mother’s passing and I wanted to extend my condolences. She was clearly an accomplished, energetic woman, and –though it never crossed my mind during high school–she must have been an amazing advocate.

In Sympathy,
