E. Dorothy “Dot” Shenk, 91
January 02, 2019
E. Dorothy “Dot” Shenk, 91, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 2, 2019, at Conestoga View Nursing & Rehabilitation, Lancaster. Born in Raleigh, Newfoundland, Canada, she was the daughter of the late Augustus and Elizabeth (Green) Johnson and was one of nine children. Dot was the beloved wife of John H. Shenk; they would have celebrated 62 years of marriage on January 7th.
In her earlier years, Dot worked as a nurse aid in St. Anthony, Newfoundland. She was known for her compassionate bedside manner and her willingness to stand up to know-it-all doctors. After coming to the US, she worked in the printing industry for 32 years. Following retirement, she volunteered her time at a local nursing home. She was most recently a member of Crossroads Community Church, Rohrerstown.
Dot was an accomplished and self-taught musician. She played the accordion and piano, and sang Newfie jigs and rigs, and hymns from memory. She loved children and angels—indeed, she barely saw a difference between the two.
In addition to her husband, John, Dot is survived by her son, Scott Smith, and his wife Marie, of New Brunswick, Canada. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Michele Sipel and her husband Matthew of Holtwood, Matt Johnson and his wife Jill Good of Lancaster, Lee Smith-Powell and her husband Frank of New Brunswick, Canada, and Lynn Rumbolt and her husband Shawn of Labrador, Canada; and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by 4 siblings, Pearl, Gladys, Charl, and Ed, all of Canada. In addition to her parents, Dot was predeceased by her son A. Perry Johnson, and 4 brothers and sisters.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service which will be held at 6:30 PM, Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 441 North George Street, Millersville, PA, 17551, where the family will receive guests beginning at 5:30 PM until time of service. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Dot’s memory be made to the PA SPCA Lancaster Center, 848 South Prince St., Lancaster, PA 17603.
