Dr. William R. Miller, Jr., 76
Dr. William R. Miller, Jr., 76, of Lancaster, died Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at Moravian Manor in Lititz. He was married to Barbara Ann Flammer Miller for 52 years last June. Born in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late William R., Sr. and Ida Louise Werner Miller.
William earned his Bachelor’s degree from Gettysburg College, and then his Master’s and Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Delaware. He was a physics professor at the Penn State Harrisburg Campus for 26 years and then at Lebanon Valley College for 10 years. William was a guest scientist at the National Institute of Science and Technology from 1992-1993.
He was a member of the Torch Club of Lancaster, the Nautical Research Guild and Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster. His pastime was studying and building scale wooden models of Chesapeake Bay work boats. William previously served in the Army Reserves.
In addition to his wife Barbara, William is survived by three daughters, Patricia, wife of William Diamondstone of West Chester, Robin, wife of Howard Bauer of Rock Hall, MD and Jill, wife of David Garvin of St. Paul, MN; three grandsons, Matthew and Daniel Diamondstone and John Robert Bauer; and two siblings, Don, husband of Lee Miller of Charlestown, WV and Priscilla, wife of Don Stoffel of Baltimore, MD.
A Visitation will take place on Friday, September 3, 2010 from 2-3 pm, followed by the Memorial Service at 3 pm with Deacon Gus Mauro officiating, at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA. Interment will be private. While this is a time filled with sadness, my hope is that the memories you keep with you in the future are of his accomplishments as an educator and his love and devotion as a husband and father (as conveyed to me by Patti). May you celebrate his life even as you mourn his passing.
