Dr. Margery M. Scanlin, 80

May 20, 2024

Dr. Margery M. Scanlin of Lititz, PA is now Home with the Lord, having passed away on 5-20-2024. She was 80 years old. She was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lancaster, PA, having sung in the choir and participated in women’s Bible Study. Her faith was the driving force behind her commitment to do everything to the best of her ability for the Glory of God. As a resident of Brethren Village, Marge spent years serving others while volunteering as treasurer in the campus grocery store.

Her parents were Robert J. and Vergie M. Scanlin of Abington, PA. She grew up loving church and God, family, sports, music, and her friends. In addition to her brother Don Scanlin, she is survived by Don’s wife Judy, their children Colleen (Richard) List, and Michael (Gina) Scanlin, and great nieces Rachel and Rebecca DeNune, and great-nephews Cole and Jake Scanlin. She is also survived by her “second family”: Judy, Joy, and Jeremy Slavin. She is also survived by cousins Glenn (Edie) Smith, Mark (Eileen) Smith, Joan Scanlin Fenstermacher, Rev. Harold Scanlin, who passed away the day before Marge on 5-19-2024 (Lenore) and their families.

Following degrees from Cairn University (B.S.) and Temple University (M.Ed. and Ed D), Marge served as a camp director and field representative for Pioneer Clubs, was a faculty member of Temple University for ten years and spent 25 years as senior executive with the American Camp Association (ACA) in Martinsville, Indiana.

Marge was a teacher and trainer, a curriculum writer, a researcher, an advisor, a youth camp director/administrator and one known in all her endeavors as having and demonstrating a positive sense of humor and a commitment to value-driven work. She was the national director of accreditation, and then established the Research Department at ACA, successfully raising grant funds to complete research efforts in youth development and other Association research.

Throughout her career, her life was full of volunteer opportunities including time with the National Collaboration for Youth, National Camp Executive’s Group, Council for Religiously Affiliated Camps, Council for National Cooperation in Aquatics, Capital City Chorus, Board of Directors of the American Camping Association, Board of Directors of Flat Rock YMCA Camp (Indiana), Board of Trustees of Cairn University, grant reviewer for Lilly Endowment and Sweet Adelines International, and consultant with camps and conference centers.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Marge’s life on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at 11AM at the Chapel at Brethren Village, 3001 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA. Light refreshments and greeting her family will follow the service.

Interment will be at the convenience of the family. If you wish to acknowledge her life and contributions, pass on a good deed to someone who needs it! In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Samaritan’s Purse, Boone, NC; Water Street Mission, Lancaster, PA; or the American Camp Association’s Research Department, Martinsville, IN.

Condolences to the Family

July 31, 2024

I’ve just received the sad news about the passing of my longtime friend Marge. I’ve been trying to reach her all month so we could share our annual birthday calls with one another. Our friendship dates back to the mid 70s when we were both teaching at Temple University. I don’t believe we ever missed contacting one another on our birthdays until now. Her friendship over the years has and will continue to be meaningful to me. My condolences to her immediate family and her extended family of friends, The Slavins. Gaylene Carpenter

I’m sorry to learn of Marge’s passing.  We sang together in Capital City Chorus years ago and she was a character and SO MUCH FUN!

I just found out about Marge’s passing today.  I met Marge when she joined Capital City Chorus in Indianapolis in the 90’s.  We served on the Board of Directors for the Chorus together. She was a tough act to follow but I learned so much from her in our time together there.

I just learned of Marge’s passing today, and I am sad yet oh so thankful that I knew her. Marge was my boss at ACA and she was also responsible for getting me into Capital City Chorus. I considered her a mentor in so many areas of my life, and I had nothing but love and respect for her. May her memory be eternal.

I became acquainted with Marge at college when we were chosen with another dear friend, Lynda Zahn, to represent the college in music.  We had many wonderful experiences and she was always someone I enjoyed and admired.  Our favorite song was “When He shall Come”.  We usually included it in our concerts.  Marge had a beautiful alto voice and often sang solo’s.  I look forward to the day when I join her in heaven and once again lift our voices in praise to our Almighty God.
