May 14, 2022

Dr. John A. Palumbo, 79, of Lititz, passed away after a brief illness on May 14, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Allentown, he was the son of the late John A. and Victoria (Micco) Palumbo. He was the loving husband of Karen A. (Rider) Van Bibber for over 18 years.

A graduate of Central Catholic High School in Allentown, he went on to attend Kings College in Wilkes-Barre, PA. He also studied biochemistry at University of Pittsburgh. John also attended University of Bologna in Bologna, Italy, where he earned his medical degree in family practice. After returning to the US, he continued working in family medicine and was able to speak fluent Italian.

He was certified by the Educational Council for Foreign Medical Graduates and satisfied all the requirements of the council in 1970. He performed rotating intern duties at Allentown Hospital in 1971 and did his residency at Lancaster General Hospital. Shortly after, he became a supervising physician for physician assistants. He served as the Lancaster County coroner and became a solo practitioner. During his time in solo practice, he delivered over 500 babies of which he was very happy to bring new lives into this world.

He will be sorely missed by his wife Karen, children: John M. Palumbo of Manheim, Michael A. Michael, I never met your father, but I remember all the good things you had to say about him.  We spent several times talking about our families, not in any hurry to leave work.  Your love will carry your family over the rough times. Keep all the goodness in your heart for him.

My heart goes out to the Palumbo family. Dr. Palumbo was the kindest and best family doctor. From the time I was very little till he retired when I was in my 40’s. He gave tough love when I it was warranted and a shoulder to cry on when I needed it. I remember going to a James Taylor concert in Hershey..and there he was with one of his boys…couldn’t wait to tell my mom he was now the coolest doctor too! 🙂
There will never be another Doctor like him.

John was not only my respected doctor, but a dear friend as well. I have numerous happy memories of him visiting with his children to enjoy my swimming pool over many summers.  We built a solid friendship over years of shared dinners seasoned with humor and thought provoking topics. I will miss him like a brother. A good man…a singularly great human being.

Oh my goodness! I am so sorry. I met John when we moved to Lancaster County in 1975 and claimed him as our GP. He took care of all our crazy situations and eventually saved my husband’s life with open Heart surgery. When we moved to NJ, I told him I would miss him but I taught him everything I knew!! He laughed at that! When our dog had puppies, we gave him one which he claimed was the smartest dog ever even though he fell down a hill and broke his leg! I remember asking him if he set the leg and he said no but that he took him to a vet! We had many conversations on medical issues as my family seemed to get the darndest things and he would always listen to me. It is one of his many gifts as most doctors do not listen. Since he was my age we were usually on the same wave length. The world has lost one of a kind!

Client, golf partner, friend.  For these reasons and to many more to mention, I will miss you.  My thoughts and prayers for Karen and the rest of John’s family.  May the memory of John’s gentle disposition and sense of humor, bring a smile to everyone’s face.

Dear Karen & Family,
We were deeply saddened to learn of John’s passing. I am truly grateful to have met John. A kind and caring gentleman.  Always , asking about my family. Family was very important to him. To me he asked others how their families were doing because he cared. You could tell immediately how much he cared about his own family. John will be deeply missed.
Our Heartfelt  Sympathy ,

Apprendo con grande dolore la scomparsa del caro John che resta sempre nel mio cuore. Mariella Palumbo e famiglia

May 22, 2022

I was so sorry to read about John’s passing.  We enjoyed many good years together in Bologna and Norristown and were neighbors in Norristown.
In Lancaster we both practiced our medical specialties and saw each other often.

John, was my neighbor and friend for over 17 years when he lived on Woodrige Blvd. I remember him in the backyard playing ball with his sons. One day he ran over to help my Dad who was visiting when he choked. John was a kind man and a great neighbor. Knowing he was always there gave me peace of mind because my husband traveled a lot. We drifted apart when he moved away. I am sure he will be truly missed by all! My thoughts and prayers are with your whole family.
