Dr. Savoye was born in Minneapolis, MN on November 27, 1930. He graduated from Le Sueur High School in 1948 and joined his father in establishing the Noel Ann Bakery, first in Belle Plaine MN and then in Le Sueur, MN.

Dr. Savoye joined the United States Marine Corps in 1950 and served in combat in Korea as a forward observer with the USMC First Division ANGLICO (Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company).

After his discharge from the Marine Corps, in 1953 Dr. Savoye enrolled in college, first at Mankato State and then at the University of Minnesota, where he earned his BS, MSEE, and Ph.D. Degrees. Upon graduation, he joined the RCA Research Laboratories in Princeton, NJ and later transferred to the RCA Electro-Optics Division in Lancaster, PA. Here he conducted and directed research and development of electronic imaging devices aimed primarily at Television Broadcasting Systems. This work was very successful and resulted in the development of the world’s first all-solid-state TV cameras, for which Dr. Savoye and his co-workers received the EMMY Award for Outstanding Technical Achievement. In 1987, after the demise of RCA, Dr. Savoye joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Lincoln Research Laboratory, where he originated and directed research and development programs aimed at advanced electronic imagers for space surveillance, visible and x-ray astronomy, and color night vision systems. Dr. Savoye retired from MIT in 1997 and continued his work in the development of electronic imaging devices as a consultant for the next ten years. During his professional career he published and presented numerous scientific papers and was awarded more than twenty U.S. Patents.

In addition to his scientific accomplishments, Dr. Savoye had a broad range of interests and activities. These included: pottery, particularly wood-fired ceramics with native clays and glaze materials; glassblowing, both Venetian-style hot glass blowing and also torch work for jewelry making; sculpture, with clay and the bronze/lost wax process; painting with egg tempura and drawing from the figure. Dear Rennie:
My heart is broken for you and the loss of Dick.  He was such a delight – always smiling and loving life.  Since Covid we have lost touch but many times Savannah and I would say you two are our favorite couple.  Your loving relationship is eternal.  You are in my prayers.  I love you dearly.

🧡🌍He was so cool !!😎 He took us all canoeing on Lake Superior and camping at Red Cliff in Jon’s TeePee with Rennie and the girls !! Lizard and Jess !! We loved them ! They were immediate family ! Daddy always did the right thing. He always told me the right thing, always had the right answer when I asked. He showed us how to do what is good to others.  🧡🌏

On one of our drives to Minnesota in the Stationwagon, I was really young. Tommy was sick the whole drive. He kept spitting into a styrofoam cup to stop himself from full-on throwing up. !!  It took two days and a night to drive out there. By the time we got to Grandma’s, he had a whole entire cup full of spit !! I got sick then at Grandma’s and could not stop throwing up ! Repeatedly. They gave me Pepto Bismal. I never had that before in my life. I would run ! To the toilet again to throw up, but it was just Pink liquid and big Pink cotton balls floating around this time ! I went upstairs in dad’s old bedroom, it was full of twin beds, because it became his brothers’ room when he moved out. Daddy was the oldest of nine children. Anyway , he came upstairs and pulled up a chair beside my bed to sit with me. He gently kept combing the side of my forehead down to my ear over and over to comfort me. All my life, down to this day, when something horrible happens or I’m having a really bad day, I do this same thing to myself, run my hand down the side of my ear over and over. To feel safe.  He was my place of comfort. 🧡

Puff Balls !!!! Better than $6,000 Truffles ! Daddy taught us which wild Mushrooms were safe/edible. Fresh Puff Balls fried in butter with salt. And all those huge orange mushrooms growing on dead logs in the woods from our walks. Almost every weekend we would go up to the Boy Scout Camp /woods walking and bring back loads of wild mushrooms to fry.

Chippy !! Our wild Squirrel ! Daddy and the boys were out chopping down a tree and a baby squirrel ran ! Up the inside of dad’s pant leg !! We raised it in our house until it was old enough to be set free. It ate our wood Chess pieces ! Mommy saved one chewed up piece all of our lives. We still have it. It’s at Becky’s house. It stayed around our back porch after we set it free and she made a nest in a very tall tree right next to it. Daddy raised so many baby Robins here in Lancaster before setting them free when they were old enough,  just like the baby Robin Jon found when we lived in Princeton, N.J.

🧡🌎Cream Puffs ! Eclairs ! Divinity ! And Chocolate Mouse !  How could I forget !? Things he taught us to make from Grandpa’s bakery.

🧡🌎 Best daddy on Earth. I forgot something, about camping , when I said he took us camping every summer back in Minnesota, and what I forgot to say was camping. On Earth. Forever. There is a promise that I learned as a child. And it is this : ” Look ! The tent of God is with mankind , and he will reside with them, and they will be his people. And God himself will be with them. And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes. And death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away. ”  Revelation 21:3,4 . A promise, one day, a ‘tent’ from God, a protective cover from him over Mankind down here on Earth, forever. I believe this promise. I want to share.🧡🌎Daughter, Annie

🧡🌎Best daddy on Earth. He was kind, gentle, patient, wise, understanding and loving. I loved his voice and would stare in awe when he played his guitar. Everynight he drank a tall glass of water before bed. I asked him why he did this. He said it was so he could wake up in the mornings ! He got ready for work at 5:00am in the mornings and drank a glass of water. He would come home from work everyday and work in the garden all evening ! He grew grape vines and made wine. I loved going under the Concord Grape Vines  he planted on posts he built with a top across it. We collected fields of Dandelions for his wine and shook trees to drop elderberries for wine.
He grew yard full of roses just to make wine from all our petals ! He read a book on how to build your own solid oak wine press , then he built it ! But ended up buying a baby pool and just crushing grapes by bare feet. Worked better .
I watched him /helped him build his own Hang Gliders ! When I was 4,5,6,7 years old. He even grew his own bamboo for the frame . Lightweight. It grows fast. We would wait for windy days and watch him run ! And jump ! Off Blosdom Hill, down the road from our house. He would soar for a while then always come to a running crashing stop ! And have to rebuild ! He took us camping every year. He was a troop leader. They were in the Newspaper, They hiked a good stretch of the Appellation Trail. We drove back to Minnesota every summer to visit family uncles aunts cousins grandparents. 😃He made us all get out of the car and swim quick in The Mighty Mississippi River ! He said just so we could all say that we’ve done it ! He took us all camping at Red Cliff Reservation in Jon’s TeePee ! He worked so hard. He was always cooking gourmet recipes brought back from travels to France. And canning. Making jars of jelly’s and Jam’s for our wine cellar ! We had tons of jars down there ! We had an old Sour Cherry tree that came with that property. That was my favorite flavor. And Plum Butter ! It was so tart and hard ! You had to cut it out of the jars with a knife! I have never had jelly or jams better than those ! He brought back Kimonos for everyone of us girls ! I think only mommy’s was real silk. We always had science gadgets  to play with. He had us all grow homemade crystals in jars. He made so many beautiful puzzels out of rare wood down in the basement wood shop. Olive wood, fruit trees, nut trees. He helped Jon work on cars. Bought Jon a Jeep. We all had fun in that Jeep ! Helped my brothers build go-carts ! He read to us every night before bed in front of the fireplace. He was a great dad. He was my place of comfort. I love him so much. He is the one, by his conscience and by his own example, that taught me what God must be like. I know that God is the Highest IQ there is. I also know that God is love no matter what bad name men might give to God. I know that God’s love is what will cause us all to see daddy again one day.  Daughter, Annie🧡🌎
P.S. There is a lot left I forgot to say here. Daddy was a great man but did not crave greatness.

I had the pleasure of knowing Dr. Savoye (and Rennie) for many years. He was the youngest at heart 90 + year old I have ever met. Always a twinkle in his eye and smile on his face, I had the opportunity to discuss books, science and the whole nature of the universe with him. A true Renaissance man with a book always in hand and appreciation for the science and art of this world. He was also very fit and an active gym goer, he always impressed me with his fortitude.  I will miss the opportunities to interact with him and my condolences to Rennie and his whole family.
