Dr. Benjamin L. Rogers, Jr.

Dr. Benjamin Lanham Rogers Jr. departed this life Monday, November 29, 2010. He was born June 26, 1920 in Roebuck, S.C. to the late Benjamin Lanham and Ethel McMurray Rogers.

After studying at Bob Jones College, he completed a B.S. degree at Clemson University, taught one year, and then volunteered for the Navy service 1944-1946. Following World War II, he earned M.S. and PhD. Degrees from universities of Minnesota and Maryland, respectively. These prepared him for experimental work on fruit trees in Washington State and western Maryland aiming for better quality fruit. Findings were shared with other scientists and fruit growers.

For many years he taught lay persons and served as elder in churches. His quiet faith touched many there and in the home, often as host to Christian missionaries, Pastors and newcomers, most recently those at Westminster Presbyterian Church. In leisure he enjoyed gardening, reading and bowling.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elinor MacDonald Rogers; by children Daniel B. Rogers of Denver, PA, husband of Selma A. Rogers and Julia L. Rogers of Ukiah, CA; by grandchildren Melissa Agan (Welty) and Benjamin M. Rogers; by brother Dr. Joseph M. Rogers of Greer, S.C. husband of Juanita G. Rogers: and by two nieces and four nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, Dr. Virgil M. Rogers husband of the late Phyllis A. Rogers; and by a nephew David Rogers.

Dear Dan & Selma,
We were sorry to hear that you’ll be missing your father for awhile.  Of course, it’s wonderful to know that you have the expectation of a reunion some day.  It sounds like your father was a good steward of all that God gave him, and will be enjoying fellowship with the Lord.  We prayed for you at the office this morning.
love,
Steve & Cindy Mousetis

Dear Elinor and family,

I was shocked to hear of Ben’s death and am grieving with you and for you.  My loss of Tom was so gradual and easy.  Yours has been sudden and hard, but I keep thinking that Tom was there to greet Ben and now Ben and Tom and Jim Read and Naomi and other old friends who knew and loved the Lord are rejoicing around His throne.  I’m sorry that I cannot attend the services tomorrow, Friday.  I am far away in Indianapolis, but my son Paul plans to represent the Beatty family.  I will be thinking of you and praying for you.

Love, Alison

Dear Rogers family,

My parents always valued their friendship with Ben and Elinor.  I grew up in awe of these special friends whom I would see my parents greet with delight from time to time.  It was a blessing to see them both at my father’s funeral in August, and, while it hurts me to think of such a happy couple being separated, I’m sure that my dad and Ben are having a great reunion together with the Lord!

May the Lord pour out His comfort on you during this time of great loss!

Dear Rogers family,

I was so sad to receive Betty Bower’s facebook message that Mr. Rogers had passed away.  It was especially sad to pass that message on to my mother who is visiting me in Indianapolis this week.  She had been looking forward to visiting you in Lancaster in the next few months.  Your friendship with my parents was a source of joy for them and I personally have many fond memories of family visits.  I know that Mr. Rogers is with the Lord.  I know that he and my father, Tom Beatty, are worshiping together.  Our family is praying for yours, for peace and comfort, during this time.

Dear Elinor and family,

It is with great sadness to hear of the passing of such a wonderful man, friend and neighbor. My thoughts and prayers are with you thru this difficult time. Mr. Rogers had a gentle soul to him that could be seen just by looking at him. I will always remember the compassion and help he showed me during my time of need. His smiling face and our car chats will be missed.

Sincerely,
Diana L. Wendler

To the family of Ben Rodgers,

I am a fruit grower in Maryland who has known Ben for many decades. He came to visit our farm, Larriland Farm, www.pickyourown.com, many times. He was very knowledgeable and helpful to us when we were new to the industry. In addition to being impressed by his knowledge, I was impressed by his kind nature and his earnest desire to see farmers grow well. He came to our aid many times over the years. Lately, I have enjoyed visiting him at the Mid Atlantic Fruit and Vegetable Convention in Hershey, PA. I will miss him as will as many other fruit growers.

Dear Elinor , Dan & Julie,

I have so many memories of Dr Ben.  When Darlene called the day after his passing on to Glory,  my first thought was  ‘Ethel is going to be so happy to see him’!
My thoughts & prayers are with all of you. If you ever get to Hancock, I m still here on Blue Hill.
Much love to you,
