August 19, 2025
Douglas R. Glouner, 88, of Lititz, PA, passed away August 19, 2025, at Hershey Medical Center. Doug shared 41 years of marriage with his wife Susan A. (Peifer) Glouner.
He was born in Lancaster and raised on Cabbage Hill, the son of the late Richard J. and Anna R. (Bielmann) Glouner. The oldest of five children, he sold soft pretzels to go to Maple Grove swimming pool. Doug graduated from Lancaster Catholic High School, Class of 1955.
Following his dad’s direction of having to enlist if he didn’t have a job in 30 days, Doug enlisted into the Air Force in June 1955, after the Korean War and served as a paramedic obtaining the rank Airman 2nd Class. He spent two years in Japan and two years in Georgia and was discharged in 1959.
Doug then worked as a surgery tech at St. Joseph Hospital, next for Trojan Yacht in Lancaster, Fulton-Marion in York and lastly at Lancaster Newspapers for 26 years in data processing responsible for transitioning all operations to computers. Doug told stories of fellow employees taking their typewriters to the bathroom so he wouldn’t replace them with computers. He retired from LNP after preparing for and experiencing Y2K.
Lastly, with Sue he co-owned Glouner’s Coastal Foods, Inc. where Sue was the “Turkey Lady” at Lancaster Central Market while Doug entertained their customers. They retired in 2016.
Doug spent lots of time on his beloved boat on the Chesapeake in Rock Hall, MD. He loved both snow and water skiing, playing golf and tennis, his collection of books and of course time on his boats. Doug’s favorite thing in his final years was to always tell a joke.
Doug was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council # 867 and the Lancaster Pirates.
In addition to his wife Sue, Doug’s family includes his daughter Melanie A. Ballard, son James M. Glouner, husband of Lori, grandson Dr. Erik P. Dear Sue and Glouner Family,
I was saddened by the news that Doug has left this earth.  His spirit, quick smile and wit was ever present when I saw him, mostly at Market in his retirement, standing by Sue’s side.  I know his presence brought joy to so many people.  I also believe that he would want us to remember the joy he spread to so many.  I do.  As you grieve, please know how special he was to so many who had the pleasure of knowing him and seeing his smile.
My best to all of you,
Deidre Simmons

Dear Sue … I am so sorry to read about Doug. Why’s is feel like it was just yesterday when I recall all the things we did, the topicsw we debated (sometimes, hotly), the new ways we learned and the great accomplishments during those “salad days” at LNP.
Seeing Doug’s face reminded Denny’s, Doug’s and my CJ-trip to Florida! Of fierce racquetball competition! Of DEC Rainbows! And so much more.
I will share in your memories of a wonderful human in this life; of such a rare individual.Brian L Long

To Sue and Jimmy and other members of Doug’s family, our deepest condolences on his passing. As veterans of Lancaster Newspapers, we spent countless hours working together. It was Doug who bought the newspapers, often kicking and screaming, into the computer age. I don’t know how he kept his sanity with all he had to put up with. He handled it well. I admired Doug for it and for  many other things. Sue, I am sorry we can’t be there for the service. We now live near Pittsburgh. Our prayers are with you and the family. Love, Marv Adams

I had the pleasure of knowing Doug when I worked as a technician at LNP in the early 90’s. Always was a great personality. I would also see him at the Central Market serving customers. Sorry to hear about his passing! Bruce Laudennerger

To me,
Doug became more than one of the LCH boys who made fun lunch  companions who never forgot the winning play in the big game of 1954. Doug and Susan were a great team- in marriage and friendships.  As a life long buddy of my husband Jim, he knew Doug as one of the really good men. I’m honored to have been a friend too.  Linda L.
