Dorothy W. Landis, 98
May 04, 2025
Dorothy Witmer Landis, 98, of Lititz, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2025, in her daughter’s home, where she had lived since September 2024. She was born July 20, 1926, in Rohrerstown, Pennsylvania, a daughter of the late Rev. Elmer G. Hertzler and Barbara Ann Witmer Hertzler.
Dorothy was a shining light in the lives of those who knew her. Her journey on this earth was marked by love, service, and unwavering faith in God. On November 28, 1946, she married Elvin N Landis; together, they managed their 56-acre farm. Dorothy loved interacting with community folks as she sold their farm-raised eggs or potatoes. She was an enthusiastic member of Landis Valley Christian Fellowship, where she was leader of the Women’s Sewing Circle and Kitchen Committee, and taught children’s Sunday School for many years. She was famous for her preserves, baked goods, and desserts. Those who stayed at her place often left with jars of preserves or a pie. She also volunteered at MRC’s Material Resource Center and for Friendship Community, doing respite care for residents.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Elvin, of 77 years, her son, John David Landis, and her great-grandson, Joshua Landis.
She is survived by her five children, Carolyn Esbenshade of Raleigh, NC, Jay (Sharon) Landis of Linville, VA, Ed (Cheryl) Landis of Scio, OR, Deb (Nelson) Herr of Mountain Top, PA and Kaye Martin of Belleville, PA, sisters Esther Garber, Marian Eby, and Mervin Hertzler; 19 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.
The memorial service will be held on May 12 at 11 AM, at Landis Valley Christian Fellowship, 2420 Kissel Hill Rd. Lancaster, PA. 17601.

We really have missed Dorothy since she moved “north” but whenever I spoke to her on the phone she was very happy with the helpful things Deb was helping her to do like Thrift Store and Samaritans shoe boxes. I am sure you, Deb, and your husband will never regret having her live with you these last days. Marlin and I loved going to their home for our small group and I loved visiting other days when I took the CDs of our church services to them. She definitely was a “very special” person.
