Dorothy Pickel Altland, 97

Dorothy Pickel Altland, 97, formerly of Lancaster, passed away Thursday, January 23, 2014, at St. Anne’s Retirement Community. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late George W. and Estella Espenshade Mehaffey. Dorothy’s first husband Albert A. Pickel died in 1980, and then her second husband Edward J. Altland died in 1998.

She worked as a floral designer for Fries Flowers for 25c years. A former member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a current member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, she worshiped at St. Anne’s Retirement Community Chapel. She enjoyed reading, gardening and flower arranging, and spending time with her family. Dorothy and her husband Albert Pickel loved to boat and spend time at the family cottage at Red Point, MD.
Surviving are her daughters Lois A., wife of Earl F. Rebman, Jr., and Sharon E. “Sherry”, wife of Leon McCloskey, both of Lancaster, 9 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husbands, Dorothy was preceded in death by her brothers Chester, Victor and George Mehaffey, her sister Jane Kline, grandsons Duane P. McCloskey and Earl F. “Kelly” Rebman, III, and great-grandson Zachary D. Lefever.
Dorothy’s family sends a heartfelt thank you all the staff of St. Anne’s Retirement Community for the exceptional care, love and compassion given to their mother and grandmother while under their care.

A Funeral Mass will be held 11 AM Wednesday, January 29, 2014, in the Chapel at St. Anne’s Retirement Community, with Msgr. Richard Onwuanibe as Celebrant. Dorothy’s family will greet friends one hour prior to Mass. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Please omit flowers.
