Donald R. Roehm, 83

April 04, 2013

Donald R. Roehm, 83, of Lancaster, was called home on Thursday, April 4, 2013 surrounded by his loving family.  Don was born to the late Julius A. and Mary (Schwartz) Roehm on October 28, 1929.

He was born and raised on Cabbage Hill. After attending Lancaster Catholic High School, he enlisted in the Army. He served his country as a paratrooper with the US Army 11th Airborne during the Korean War, obtaining the rank of sergeant.  After 37 years of service with the government, he retired in 1985 from the New Cumberland Army Depot in the International Logistics Department. Since retirement, he has enjoyed working with his son Tom in the construction business.

In 1953 he married Shirley Ann (Hartman), the love of his life, who preceded him in death in 1978, after 24 beautiful years of marriage.

Don was a devoted Catholic and family man. He was a founding member and an active parishioner of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church serving as an usher for over 40 years and starting the Cub Pack #98. He served as chairman for the annual festival at St. Leo’s for many years and was active in various committees at the church. He received the St. Leo Award in 1971 for his outstanding service to the parish. Don was a 3rd degree member of Knights of Columbus, a member of V.F.W, and the American Legion.

Don dearly loved his family and was an inspiration to his children and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.  He enjoyed camping, fishing, boating (especially on the Chesapeake Bay) and traveling with his family.  The closeness of his family brought him great joy.

He is survived by his five beloved children, Douglas R. (wife Karen) of Leola, Vicki Lynn Thode (husband Henry) of Lititz, Thomas R. (wife Mary Catherine) of East Petersburg, John R. (wife Karen) of Lancaster and Timothy R. (wife Suzanne) of Lititz. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren: Kelly Price (husband Paul), Adam Thode (wife Joan), Bryan, Jacquelyne, Brandon, Andrea, Daniel, Jennifer, Joseph, William, Timothy and Robert; 3 sisters, Muriel E., wife of George E. Kennett, of Lancaster, Mary C., wife of Jack C. Vierhus, of San Jose, CA, and Kathleen T. Fisher of Lancaster. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Joann Anderson wife of Kenneth Anderson of Lancaster, PA.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at 11:00AM Saturday, April 13, 2013 at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 2427 Marietta Ave, Lancaster, PA 17603 with The Rev. Peter I. Hahn and the Rev. Dear Vicki,  I’m so sorry to read of your Dad’s passing.   Even though we know that more than likely our parents will leave our earthly life before us, it does not lessen the pain of our grief.  I have lost both my parents also, I do understand.  Our love lives on, the memories remain, until we are reunited.  Thanks be to God.  Wishing you His peace.
You are in my thoughts, and prayers.
Most Sincerely,

To Doug and the entire family,

We extend our sincere sympathy to you in the passing of your father.

Ed and Nancy Sauder

I’m sorry, I just found out about your Fathers passing.  He was a great guy.  I remember my him and my Father selling Christmas trees at St Leo.  There was a barn along Marietta Pike, maybe even before the school was built.  It was so cold we huddled around a barrel with fire.

Also going to church in the barn in Silver Springs.  There was a certain closeness about it.

Doug, Vicki, Tom and John and Tim you are in my prayers.  Be thankful we has some of greatest parents around!
