Donald R. Mummert, 99

June 13, 2023

Donald R. Mummert, 99, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2023, at Hospice and Community Care of Mt. Joy where he received kind and compassionate care. A longtime resident of Florida, he was born in Davenport Iowa to the late Roy and Earline (Anderson) Mummert. After his high school graduation in Philadelphia in 1942, he enlisted into the Navy and served in WWII aboard the USS Kwajalein. He participated in taking back the Philippine Islands.

Donald was a sociable person, making friends wherever he was. He traveled and lived in many places. After his return home from his service in the Navy, Donald eventually opened his own business; Mummert Sheet Metal; in Lancaster County. He then sold that business and he continued to work in similar career fields in Pittsburg PA, Detroit, MI, Richmond, VA and Delta, UT; until his retirement in 1990. After retiring he moved to Fort Myers Florida and lived in DelTora golf community for 33 happy years before moving back to Lancaster in November. He was also a long-time member of the VFW, American Legion and Masonic Lodge 43 in Lancaster, where he obtained the title of Worshipful Master in 1987.

Donald is survived by his niece Diane Kurtz of Lancaster, her children Brandon Kurtz and Logan Kurtz (Taylor); and his nephew Joseph Esbenshade Jr. of Tucson AZ (Brenda), and their children Kevin Esbenshade (Wendy) and Joseph Esbanshade III (Autumn). Along with his parents he is preceded in passing by his sister Geraldine Esbenshade.

A graveside service will be held June 21, 2023, at 10am at Landis Valley Mennonite cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Donald’s name may be made to Hospice and Community Care at hospiceandcommunitycare.org.

Happy 100, Don!  We thought We would celebrate with You here, but You and the Lord had Better Plans — 10 Weeks Before a Century.  Diane is the ‘Best Niece’ You could have asked for.   Mom had “The BEST”  Del Tura Neighbor for 30 Years she could have wished for.    Joan and I are so appreciative of your unconditional kindness through the 3 Decades.   As a past Elk of Lancaster Lodge,  it was nice to show Diane a part of  You she never knew.  Now She Does!  Our Motto is:
“Elks Care, Elks Share,” & Don Mummert,  this saying fit You to a “T”… Pat Parins,  Marion’s Son.
P.S.   I believe the picture of that handsome guy was taken at Lancaster Elks!  We Love You, Don!

Diane our hearts r so heavy to see that Don has passed. I wrote him a few times last year but now know why he did not answer. I hope you remember his friends from Pgh Fred and Kathy Verno. We visited you with Don a few times at Chesapeake Bay. I remember your mom’s corn chowder and the fun we had up there. Don was a dear friend and we truly loved him. Our sympathy and prayers to all

Mr Don was one of the nicest people I met at the club.  We met right after the hurricane, he just got out of the hospital.  I loved all his stories ,he truly was a wealth of information. Before he left the club , I asked him for a big spoon as a mamento.  I would call him every time it came up in the drawer. I spoke to him, for the last time, the Monday before he passed.  He said he was no better no worse.  I guess I wasn’t thinking that it would be my last time.  RIP Mr Don you are definitely loved and missed at the club.  Love your friend French toast Patty 💔

Loved listening to Uncle Donald’s stories and adventures!  He was an avid reader with an excellent memory for details and could talk about any subject. We will miss his big smile and fascinating stories!

Mr. Mummert will be terribly missed here in the Del Tura Country Club community. He was always a ray of sunshine to everyone that passed by his house, as he always had a hello for everyone and a smile on his face. He will forever be in our memories. Such a great loss to our community. May he rest in peace.
