David H. Kitch, 90

November 01, 2016

A truly good and gentle man has passed on. David H. Kitch, 90, simply died of old age on November 1, 2016, after a long full life. Known locally as the founder of Starlite Camping Resort of which he was especially proud as this was a family endeavor requiring the hard work of all five children. He was the son of the late Davis H. Kitch and Angelena T. (Wiegand) Kitch.

Dave grew up in Strasburg at the family business, the historic Swan Hotel. He graduated from Lancaster Catholic High School, class of 1944, where he was proud to have received the Knights of Columbus Award. He served in the Army Air Force as an Aviation Cadet during WWII. For 27 years, he was employed by Lancaster Press, Inc. as a Linotype and Monotype machinist. He was on the Board of Directors for PA Dutch Visitors Bureau, was an officer for the local Federal Credit Union, and was a regional director for the PA Campground Owners Association.

His interest in learning was lifelong. He enjoyed hunting, camping, travel, bird watching, photography and model RR. Some highlights of his travels include a caravan through Mexico and a trip across Alaska.

He was known and admired by many for his honesty, unbounded energy, and his amazing innate ability to build or repair almost anything small or large. Above all, it was about family with Dave. He especially loved to entertain his grandchildren with storytelling. He will be remembered for his great, wry, witty sense of humor. On special occasions, to the delight of all, he would play favorite tunes on his accordion and piano.

Mourning his passing are, Lee, his beloved wife of 69 years; children: Kate Kirchner (Chris), Eileen Kitch, Douglas Kitch and David Kitch, Jr. (Sue); grandchildren: Erin Martell, Derringer Kitch, Sarah Kitch, Andrea Daniel (Justin), Rose Kitch, Dawn Kitch, Dave Kitch and Rock Kitch; great-grandchildren: Piper and Maebry Daniel; sisters: Frances Fondacaro and Margaret Schuelkens; along with many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death was son, Donald H. Kitch; sisters, Anna Yohn and Catherine Feister; and grandchildren: Alexandra Weitzel and Angelena Kitch.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2:30 PM on Friday, November 4, 2016 at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 441 N. George St., Millersville, PA 17551. A viewing will be held from 1:30-2:30 PM at the funeral home. Interment will be in St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice & Community Care, 685 Good Drive, Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604.

Dear Dave, Sue, and all the Kitch family,
Sorry this is so late, but I only learned about Mr. Kitch’s passing. When I first began doing bird walks at Starlite, I loved it when he joined us. He always added something special to the event. He is still there, walking the trails without the burden of a tired body. The world is a better place because of Starlite Campground. It is a legacy to be proud of. We offer our sincere sympathy.  Lee & Jim Amigh

Both my father and myself had not only the privilege but the honor to not just have worked with Dave at Lancaster Press but to have been his friend. I’m sure that anyone who worked with Dave, or just simply got to know him, would agree with the first line in his obituary in that he truly was a good and gentle man. Dave had an incredible ability to keep the machinery working at the print shop. He always seemed to add a calming touch to anything he did. He was a very good friend of both of us, especially of my fathers who passed on 8 years ago. I know that Dave will be sorely missed by his family and all who came to know him through the years. My deepest sympathies go out to all of you. May God deeply bless you all and be with you in your time of mourning. I wish I could have attended your service for Dave but unfortunately I have business to attend to out of state and couldn’t change it.  God be with you. Sincerely, Roger Bouder

Mr. Kitch was a kind and gentle soul and will be sadly missed. Our family had the chance to chat with him many times over the years of camping at starlight. Think of all the good memories that he has left with you.

A long life, well lived…full of love.  And yet, goodbye is still very difficult.  May happy memories of shared times bring peace.  Your father and mother were always so welcoming to all of your friends. The extended kindness will never be forgotten.

We are so sorry to hear of the loss of Papa Dave. We have enjoyed many years in camp, and hearing Papa Dave’s many stories. As our campsite originally was in the Little Dipper, many mornings we would encounter Papa Dave barreling up the trail road from his house in the small lite blue SUV. Always a smile. He always could answer our questions regarding humingbirds. A wealth of knowledge.
Our deepest sympthy to the whole family,
Roger and Carole Wenzek

Dear Kitch Family,
I am so very sorry to hear of Uncle David’s passing.  I am Diane & Charley Monaghan’s daughter (Margaret’s granddaughter).  I hadn’t seen Uncle David in quite some time, but have such fond memories of him and visiting camp.  Uncle David was always so warm and welcoming to me and my brother, Paul.  I remember coming to camp with my grandparents to visit Uncle David and Aunt Lee.  Our favorite thing was to play mini-golf and Uncle David would always let us play multiple rounds and reward us with whatever ice cream we wanted at the end.  I think the last I saw him was at Aunt Annie and Uncle Bob’s 50th where we had the family reunion at camp.  He will definitely be missed.  You all are in my thoughts and prayers.

To All the Kitch Family,
I am saddened by the news of “Mr. Kitch’s” passing. I will always remember him with a smile on my face, in the 40+ years of camping at Starlite every memory I have of him is a sweet one, my fondest being his reading jokes from that book of jokes during the pot luck dinners. I am sure you all are keenly aware of how lucky and blessed you were to have him as your Dad and Granddad. He was a remarkable man, that raised a remarkable family. I wish I could be there Friday, but unfortunatley I am unable to attend. Please know that you will all be in my thoughts and prayers. God Bless you all.

To Aunt Lee and all my Kitch cousins:
I am so very sorry to hear of the passing of your beautiful husband and beloved Dad into eternal life this week.  I will always remember his gentleness, his very funny sense of humor, and his incredible work ethic.  We have so many happy memories of holidays at your home and at camp.   I always enjoyed the home videos, the accordian sessions, all of the good food, and the ways we played together as cousins.  It was wonderful growing up to see how each of the five siblings and their spouses (my aunts and uncles) loved each other and easily blended into one big happy family.  I remember his four sisters calling your Dad, “Juney”!  It pains me to know that I will not be able to come to his funeral service on Friday.  But please know that I am with all of you in prayer and in thanksgiving for this beautiful man, who is now at peace, my Uncle David.
