Carolyn A. (Smith) Sladecek, 67

February 19, 2018

Carolyn A. (Smith) Sladecek, 67, of Leola, passed away on Monday, February 19, 2018 at Lancaster General Hospital. Born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey to the late Martha E. (James) and Horace Burton Smith, Carolyn was a lifelong resident of Lancaster.

For the several years, Carolyn was a dedicated employee of Aggregates Equipment, Inc. and Mr. Bill’s Seafood.

Annual family vacations in Cape May made Carolyn a life-long lover of the beach. She enjoyed camping and fishing with her children and friends. Carolyn enjoyed traveling and especially spending time in Arizona. She was an avid and extremely talented crafter, gardener, and baker and enjoyed sharing the fruits of her labor with her friends and family. She cultivated gorgeous vegetable gardens and flower beds every year. Carolyn was the best at making holidays special for her family and grandchildren and her apple and pecan pies were in demand for every event. She loved laughing and reminiscing with her brother Andrew and his wife Deb and adored her nieces and nephew.

Above all, Carolyn was a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend. She never missed one of her children’s sports games and created the most beautiful memory books for them. She adored and spoiled her grandchildren and she was a trusted friend and “partner in crime” to her friends Carmen, Deb, Judy, and Kay.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, George R. Sladecek. She is survived by her children: Paul Sladecek and his wife Sara of Palm Bay, FL, Cynthia Flanagan and her husband Edward of Mendham, NJ, and Kelly Sladecek of Willow Street, PA; her grandchildren: Gabriel, Paige, Natalie, William, and grandpup, Daisy; and her brother Andrew B. Smith and his wife Deborah; her nieces Jessica and Blakely, and nephew Ryan; and great nieces Harper, Emrey, Madeline and Finley.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service which will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, March 3, at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home, 414 E. King Street, Lancaster, PA 17602, where the family will receive guests beginning at 1:00 PM. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

We are greatly saddened by the passing of Carol.  We worked well together for many years.  Carol was in charge of placing and receiving orders for very important parts at Aggregates Equipment.  While she was fair and serious, she was also relaxed and engaging whenever the opportunity arose.  The most recent story she shared with us was her childhood memories at her grandparent’s house in Lancaster.  She loved Miesse’s Candy and, after finding that out, we sent her an extra box.  On December 27, 2017, we received this email message from Carol:

You guys are too much!

When my brother and I were younger we lived in Pittsburgh.  We would travel to Lancaster to visit our Grandparents.
My Grandpa would put a box of Miesse’s candy in his bottom desk drawer.  My brother and I, immediately upon arrival, would go to his study and “snitch” pieces of candy. (like he wouldn’t know they were gone)

My Grandfather, Uncle, and later my Dad owned a box shop in Lancaster. They made all of Miesse’s candy boxes for many years.

So, thank you again.

Happy New Year!

Carol

From what we know now, we suspect that Carol was not feeling at her best when she sent this wonderful note.  It went all around our office, and we thanked her for sharing her story with us.  It was another month until we began to suspect that Carol was not well.  We got a personal call to tell us of her passing, and we are still stunned and saddened by the loss.  We truly enjoyed working with such a vibrant person as Carol.

With Sincerest Condolences,
Chuck, Donna, and JoAnna

So sorry to hear about your Mother’s passing. It seemed so sudden, although I knew of her diagnosis. I knew your Mother through working with her at Mr. Bill’s. I also got to experience some of her baking skills! She was always nice to me and I’m sure she will be missed by many!
Peace and prayers to your family. Kathy Swisher
