Carol A. Bender, 58

March 20, 2018

Carol A. Bender, 58, of Lancaster passed away in the company of her loving family on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at the Hershey Medical Center. Born in Easton, PA, she was the daughter of Esther (Storms) McCarty and the late Thomas E. McCarty. She was the devoted wife of John L. Bender, Jr. for 36 years.
A 1978 graduate of JP McCaskey High School in Lancaster, Carol dedicated her life to raising her children and being a homemaker. She spent most of her time with her family, whom she adored. She especially loved being with her granddaughter, Hannah Christine, and she took joy in helping watch Dylan and Ella, who were other important children in her life.
Carol was a passionate lifelong Philadelphia Eagles fan whose persistence paid off as she celebrated their first Super Bowl victory in 2018. She was a huge supporter of Fighting4US, an organization dedicated to supporting individuals suffering from RSD/CRPS, operated by childhood friend Leslie Gianopoulos who selflessly participated in a paired kidney donation program in Carol’s honor. She was also a supporter of the Celebration for Life, Inc. organization, which raises money to benefit young cancer survivors and their loved ones.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Danielle N. Bender and Michelle L., wife of John J. LoCicero; and two sons, Andrew J. Bender and Alex T. Bender, all of Lancaster. Also surviving her is her granddaughter, Hannah Christine; two sisters, Patrice S., wife of Michael C. Hoenninger of Lancaster, and Trudy M., wife of John R. Wonder of Berlin, MD; brother, Thomas C. McCarty, husband of Jennifer K., of Lancaster, and a host of loving nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received from 7-9 PM on Monday, March 26, 2018 and again on Tuesday, March 27, from 11 AM-12 Noon, at the Charles F. Snyder, Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA. Funeral Services will be held at 12 Noon on Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Riverview Burial Park, Lancaster. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Carol’s memory may be made to: Celebration for Life, 225 Black Road, Quarryville, PA 17566, www.c4life.org; Fighting4Us, 721 Dorsea Road, Lancaster, PA 17601, www.fighting4us.com; or Clyde F. Dear Bender-McCarty Family, We’re sending you our deepest sympathy for the loss of your lovely Carol.  Visiting the McCarty house with Trudy during our Millersville days was always a treat — made special by the quick laughter and warm kindness of Carol.  Rest in Peace, sweet Carol.  All our best to your family during this very difficult time.

John and family,
I’m so sorry for this sudden saddness with the loss of Carol.  Please know that even though I haven’t seen you folks for a long time that I still think of you as family and love you as family. My sympathy goes out to you and I pray to the Lord for you. God bless you guys. Red Todd

To the Bender family: We met at Pearl Street United Methodist Church as all of our children were growing up, and I continued to see the kids at McCaskey where my children attended as did yours. I am truly saddened that Carol did not get to enjoy the benefits of her new kidney for very long. Please know that my thoughts are with all of you as you struggle to come to grips with all that has happened. Mary Forster
