Candide G. B. Rozman

Candide Giselle Boucher Rozman-mother, Army wife, grandmother, great grandmother, musician, and artist, departed this life on Friday, August 1, 2008. Born in Lewiston, Maine February 18, 1924, she was the daughter of Charles Boucher and Marie Boucher nee Gagne. A few years later her family moved to Wilson, Connecticut where she lived until World War II ended. She resided in Hartford, Connecticut for a brief time after World War II and was a resident of Manchester, Connecticut on retirement of her husband, Lieutenant Colonel Robert W. Rozman, from the Army in 1965 until relocating to Pennsylvania in 1987.

During World War II Mrs. Rozman volunteered as a gray lady and worked in a defense related plant. Most importantly, she maintained a correspondence with the love of her life, Bob Rozman, whom she’d met in 1938 and would marry in 1945, becoming a young mother and homemaker in Hartford, Connecticut until the Korean War.

From October 1950 to December 1965, Mrs. Rozman lived the life of an Army officer’s wife raising her three children and making homes for her family in Blackstone, Virginia (Camp Pickell), Munich, and Nurnberg, Germany, Fort Knox, Kentucky, Manchester, Connecticut (while her husband was in Viet Nam), Hingham, Massachusetts, Manchester, Connecticut, and Schweinfurt, and Kaiserslautern, Germany. In every location she made a warm and loving and attractive home for her family, played violin in chamber groups and the civic orchestra, sang in the Catholic chapel and church choirs, and was active in bridge groups.

She was also active in many of the officer’s wives community volunteer programs and supported her children’s school and athletic programs. When overseas, she and her husband and family took full advantage of the cultural opportunities available by traveling to Belgium, Denmark, France, Holland, Iceland, Italy, Luxemburg, the Riviera, Switzerland and a chapel group trip to the Holy Land.

On her husband’s retirement from the Army, Mrs. Rozman made a wonderful and comfortable home in Manchester, Connecticut. She saw her oldest son graduate from the United States Military Academy in 1970, assisted her second son in his career at the University of Connecticut until his graduation in 1971 and continued raising her daughter, participating in many of her daughter’s school activities eventually seeing her daughter graduate from Keene State University in New Hampshire in 1975. She was active in her community in Manchester, Connecticut being especially involved as a musician with the civic orchestra and chamber groups, Catholic Church choir, and bridge groups. She also returned to her favorite sport, tennis and supported her husband in his second career.

As her children left for college and began their families Mrs. Rozman was active in supporting her sons’ and daughter’s families, often traveling to the Army posts her sons were stationed at and the locations her daughters husband traveled to through medical school, residency, and practice as a medical doctor. She was an important part of the lives of all nine of her grandchildren and three great grandchildren. During this time she and her husband continued to travel to much of the United States and Canada.

In 1987, Mrs. Rozman and her husband relocated to Lititz, Pennsylvania to be near their daughter’s family where their daughter’s husband, now a radiologist, was in practice in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She continued to be active in the community, with musical and choir groups, bridge groups, and tennis until declining health in the last four years prevented these activities. .

Mrs. Rozman and her husband had a blessed marriage of 62 years. They had been a virtually inseparable couple for 70 years. That union produced a large family of four living generations. Pre-deceased by her husband, Mrs. Rozman is survived by her son Lieutenant Colonel (retired) Tom Rozman and wife Joy of Williamsburg, Virginia, son Major (retired) Robert L "Rick" Rozman and wife Linda of Marshall, Virginia, and her daughter Elaine Alexander and her husband Dr. Allen Alexander, of East Petersburg, Pennsylvania, her nine grandchildren Doug, Bryan and wife Maria, Michael, Matthew and wife Yvonne, Melissa (Hogan), and Todd and wife Kathy Rozman and Bradley, Matthew, and Tom Alexander, and her three great grandchildren Raquel, Emma, and Karl Rozman. She is also survived by three of her eight sisters, Nonna, Yolanda, and Gloria, their families and the families of her deceased siblings. Five sisters Jeanette, Anne, Lorraine, Lorette, Noela and four brothers, Fern, Roger, Wildy, and Lucian preceded her in death.

Loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, splendid homemaker, world traveler, musician, sportswoman, and friend you made a difference in many lives. You held our home together for over 15 years of military travel, often without your husband. You took an abiding interest in our lives and you were someone to talk to and work life’s issues out. You definitely brought that French Canadian savior faire into play, making life a colorful and active experience. You were a buoyant spirit that kept energy alive in what became a large family. You faced all of the ups and downs of life so well that those of us who follow have been given an example to meet. As a partner with your husband you made family life special for your growing family. You imparted to all of us values that we carry into the future. You were a good woman whose love and sacrifice for us made it possible to succeed. You established the importance of family. Till we meet again, God bless you Mom.

Interment is planned for Arlington National Cemetery.

Elaine, I’m so sorry to read about your mother’s passing.  You’ve been thru a lot losing your parents both so close together.  I played tennis with her for a number of years and we had lots of laughs.  I’m so sorry and send my deepest sympathy to you and your family.
