Calvin M. “Butch” Ross, Jr., 68

February 19, 2013

The spirit of Calvin M. (Butch) Ross, Jr., 68, of Manheim, went to be with Jesus, his Lord and Savior, on Tuesday, February 19, 2013, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.  He was surrounded by his family, clergy and the caring and compassionate staff of Hospice & Community Care in Mount Joy.

Born in Bryn Mawr, PA, he was the son of the late Calvin M. Ross, Sr. and Mary (Hooverman) Ross.  He was the loving and beloved husband of Barbara (Harry) Ross with whom he shared 46 years of marriage.  In addition, he is survived by two daughters: Michelle C., wife of John Krause and Cynthia L., wife of Eric Moore; six grandchildren who were his pride and joy: Abigail, Veronica, Jamie, Joseph, Ryan and Evan; a newly adopted puppy, Luci, who was his constant companion during these last months.

He was a loving, caring and devoted husband, father and grandfather whose life revolved primarily around his family.  He was an avid racing fan, a sport also embraced by his grandsons, and enjoyed following NASCAR and local dirt track racing.  He had a keen interest in reading and researching military history.  He enjoyed many hours relaxing to his favorite music-Doo Wop from the 50’s and 60’s-and had a vast knowledge of rock & roll trivia.

A Hempfield High School graduate, he proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1962-1966 as an Engineman 2nd Class.  He enjoyed attending reunions with his former shipmates from the USS Telfair on which he spent most of his 4 years of service.  He was employed as an auto body and paint technician for a number of years, and then worked as a store manager for James F. Wild, Inc. for 25 years in their automotive paint and body shop division in Lancaster.  He was currently employed by the Manheim Auto Auction as a condition report writer.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11AM on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at Zion Lutheran Church, 1905 Broad Street, East Petersburg, PA 17520 with Rev. Dan Long and Rev. Mary Margaret Ruth officiating.  Family and friends will be received following the interment at the church cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Butch’s memory to Zion Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or to Hospice & Community Care, P.O. Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604.  To send the family online condolences, please visit SnyderFuneralHome.com. Charles F. Snyder, Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory 717-560-5100

Dear Barbie, so sorry to hear about Butch! I have had him in my prayers since I learned of the cancer. It’s been years since we’ve seen you, I believe it was in Akron at the last reunion. My heart and prayers go out to you and your girls and those wonderful grandchildren. They will miss him the most!! May God fill the void in your life and heart. Love, Suzanne (Suzie)
daughter of Aunt Betty and Uncle Bill Barham.

Butch, you were a blessing to all who have known you. Thank you for being so kind to me all these years. I am so saddened by your passing. Barb, Michelle and Cindy, I am lifting you all up in prayers of strength, peace and calmness. May God help you through this terrible time. I love you all, Lanie

Butch, you will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know you. You managed to put a smile on my face every day with your jokes, your grin, your big heart, and by cranking that doo-wop music in the cars every time you found a new disc. You made the CR building survivable on days I wanted to cry, and I’m quite sure you can see this little thank you now. My deepest condolences to your family, may they find comfort in their time of need and know that your love will live on forever. Rest in Peace, my friend.

I was so sorry to hear about BUTCH!  We knew each other from Wilds a long time ago then again at Manheim auto auction. Butch was a great guy!

Barb and Family, We knew you and Butch from the car club(years ago) and were so sorry to hear of his passing.  He always was saying "Barbie" could do it.  We also kept in touch through the body shop.  Butch was a great person and we enjoyed him stopping in to the shop.We haven’t been in touch since then, but we talk of him often.  He will always be remembered.  Your whole Family is in our thoughts and prayers.
