Betty Jane (Mischnick) Huegel, 98

October 18, 2025

With peace in her heart and love in her soul, Betty Jane (Mischnick) Huegel went home to be with God on October 18, 2025, just two months shy of her 99th birthday. She is now joyfully reunited in heaven with her beloved husband, Edward P. Huegel Sr., with whom she shared 64 beautiful years of marriage.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 18, 1926, to the late Walter C. and Lillian H. (Buckwalter) Mischnick, Betty’s early years were shaped by the challenges of the times. These formative experiences instilled in her a deep-rooted resilience, resourcefulness, and unwavering faith—qualities that defined her life and inspired all who knew her.

At just 17, Betty moved from the city to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, embracing a life of hard work and dedication. She began working at Armstrong World Industries to help support her family. During World War II, Betty wrote letters to a soldier overseas—correspondence that blossomed into a wartime romance. When the war ended, Edward returned home in December 1945 and, a few months later, asked Betty to be his wife. They were married on September 21, 1946, and went on to build a life grounded in faith, love, and family.

Together, Betty and Ed raised five children: Edward P. Jr. (Shirley), Michael D. (Elizabeth), Diane Salm, Scott L. (Yvonne), and Mary Ann Herr (Thomas). Betty had always dreamed of becoming a nurse or a teacher. Having been a mother to five children, she was able to do both. She found great joy in preparing meals for her family, tending to her flowers, taking walks on the family farm, feeding the birds beneath her pine trees, and attending Mass at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church in Millersville.

“All because two people fell in love,” Betty and Ed became the proud grandparents of fourteen grandchildren—Darren, Sharron, Amy, Carrie, Rebecca, the late Michael Salm Jr., Emily, Erin, Ryan, Christian, Adam, Ross, Rachel, and Jillian—as well as twenty-six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Richard E. Mischnick, and is survived by her sister, Sara L. Lefever.

Betty was a woman of many roles throughout her life: chef, baker, nurse, chauffeur, gardener, and faithful churchgoer. In her later years, she found joy in quiet pastimes like reading, doing puzzles, playing Scrabble and Yahtzee with her grandchildren, baking Christmas cookies, and watching Dancing with the Stars.

Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we also celebrate a life so richly lived. Betty’s legacy is one of love, strength, faith, and family. Her spirit lives on in the generations she nurtured and the lives she touched.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 601 E. Delp Road, Lancaster, PA 17601, on Friday, October 24, 2025, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery, Bausman, PA. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to view at Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543, on Thursday, October 23, 2025, between 5 and 7 p.m., with the recitation of the Holy Rosary to follow. There will be no viewing Friday at the church.

In honor of our sweet Betty’s love for nature, the family invites you to plant flowers and place a rock in your garden to remember her always.

So sorry for the loss of your mother. As a young girl I would cross the street to visit your Mom’s flower gardens. I was enthralled by the beauty of the plants.she would tell me the names of them all.The yard, to a young girl’s eye, was magical & she always welcomed me & shared her knowledge. That was the beginning of a life full of beauty of plants for me❤️Stephanie Brown (Steele)

Mrs Huegel was a very special lady, who  I had the pleasure to have met through her daughter, Mary Ann.  Mary Ann married my husband’s brother, Thomas Herr.  We enjoyed many holidays with her and I will remember her fondly and cherish the memories.   Rest in peace Mrs. Huegel. Deb Herr
