Betty A Shelly, 92
October 15, 2023
Betty A Shelly, 92, of Lititz, PA passed away at Kadima Rehab & Nursing in Palmyra, PA, on Sunday, October 15, 2023. Betty was the loving wife of Darrell Shelly, until his passing in 2021.
She grew up on the farm of her grandparents, the late Herman and Sadie Ellinger, along the Chiques Creek outside of Manheim, PA, near the Lancaster Junction. She played varsity Field Hockey for Manheim High School and was Queen of the 1947 Manheim Halloween Parade. She graduated from Manheim High in 1948.
She enjoyed a career as a bookkeeper, having kept impeccable records for Armstrong Floors, Garden Spot Electric, and finally the Lititz Borough Office. Betty has been an active member of the Lititz United Methodist Church since the 1960’s, volunteering time as a Vacation Bible School Teacher.
She enjoyed cooking, baking, bowling, fishing, “Big Band” music, and Classic Movies. She loved feeding her backyard birds, squirrels, wrens, and Ducks. Betty was an avid Philadelphia Phillies fan, tuning into most of their 162 games each year, even when they weren’t very good. She loved long road trips with husband Darrell in their Pontiacs. They traveled through the North and South touring Civil War Battlefields. They visited Morgantown, West Virginia, many times, to watch their daughter Jeanne twirl at halftime in front of thousands of Mountaineer fans. They drove together across country to CA, OR, and Idaho, visiting their son and Grandkids. She and Darrell raised their daughter Jeanne, and son Steve, in the house that Darrell built in Lititz.
Her favorite activity was in her kitchen, preparing meals and baking cookies for her Grandkids, Erika, Courtney, Kaitlyn, and Jake. She made certain when they visited that they experienced what the East Coast had to offer, by taking them on trips to New York City, Rehoboth Beach, Museums, Live Plays at the Dutch Apple and Fulton, Hershey Park, Knoebels, and Darrell’s cabin.
She had a kind heart and gave her best effort to make everyone’s life better.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband Darrell Shelly, and her daughter Jeanne Shelly. She is survived by her son Steve Shelly, and grandchildren Erika, Courtney, Kaitlyn, and Jake Shelly of Kuna, ID.
A memorial service will take place October 28, 2023, at Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz PA at 2:30pm. The family invites guests to a visitation beginning at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to Lititz United Methodist Church, 201 Market St, Lititz, PA 17543, can be made in Betty’s honor.

I grew up on Lincoln Ave in Lititz and remember when the Shelly’s moved into their home around the corner. I would watch Darrel lay the mountain stone on his home and then I got to know the family and was friends with Jeannie. Betty and Darryl always made me feel at home and I enjoyed going to there beautiful cabin in Ickesburg. I can still smell the roasted peanuts they used to make. We also went to United Methodist Church. When we moved to Kissel Hill we lost touch, but I have many fond memories of the family and Betty was a wonderful lady. My condolences to Steve and the family.
