Berthold Johann Hartmann, 97

Berthold Johann Hartmann, 97, of Willow Valley, passed away on Monday, December 31, 2018 in Manheim Twp. A former resident of Queens, NY, He was the loving husband of the late Anna Rebecka (Pape) Hartmann with whom he shared 42 years of marriage.

Born in Spiesen, Saarland, Germany, he was the youngest of five children to the late Peter and Maria (Huwig) Hartmann.

A loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Berthold held a special place in each one of his grandchildren’s hearts. They were as devoted to him as he was to them and they remained with him throughout his illness.

A German infantry soldier who served during WWII on the Russian Front and Italian Campaign, he was captured by the US Army in 1943 in Anzio and sent to Chicago as a POW. After returning to Germany, he married his wife, Anna and immigrated to the US in 1955. He was employed as senior accountant by HC Bohack and office manager by Montebello Fuel Co.

Berthold was a member of the Plattdeutsche Volksfest Verein and Steinauer of NY German Clubs, and was an avid philatelist, collecting a wide range of stamps.

He is survived by his son, Manfred Hartmann and his wife Helene of East Drumore Twp; three granddaughters: Alexandra Tufano and her husband, Daniel of Lancaster, Adrienne Smith and her husband Douglas of Lancaster, Margaret Fisher and her husband, Thaddaeus of Chester Springs and five great grandchildren: Olivia Tufano, Nicholas Tufano, Claudia Smith, Benjamin Smith and Thaddaeus Paul Fisher. He was preceded in death by his four older siblings and his companion of 15 years, Alma Tummel. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews in the US and Germany.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, January 7 at 10 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 119 S. Prince Street, Lancaster. There will be a viewing from 9 am until the time of Mass at the church. Burial will be on Tuesday, January 8 at 10:30 am at Maple Grove Cemetery, 127-15 Kew Gardens Road, Kew Gardens, NY.
