Benjamin Rohrer Brookmyer, 78

Benjamin Rohrer Brookmyer, 78, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2010 with his wife of 38 years, Mary E. Corthouts, and family and friends by his side at Hospice of Lancaster County.  Born in 1932 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, son of  Benjamin Chester Brookmyer of Kissel Hill, and Mabel Rohrer Brookmyer of Lancaster, he graduated from McCaskey High School in 1950.

His first job at the age of 16 was digging ditches for 50 cents an hour.  Later, selling steel for Jones and Laughlin led him to build and lease industrial buildings, while running his own aerosol manufacturing business, Brookmyer Specialties Company.

Ben loved hunting, fishing, motorcycling, boating, tennis and skiing.  He was part owner and general manager of Meadow Valley Ski Area near Conestoga, PA.  Ben and his wife Mary reopened Rocky Springs Park in West Lampeter Township in the late 70’s and they lived at the park for many years before moving to Meredith, NH and Big Pine Key, FL.   A video of Ben and Rocky Springs Park, produced by Thom Colson a/k/a DaddyC can be viewed here.

Ben’s wisdom, knowledge, kindness and caring ways will be sorely missed by his children, Cris Brookmyer and husband Len Edwards, son, Keith and his wife, Sydney Brookmyer, daughter, Dr. Barb Brookmyer and husband Bill Klein, and son Rory Brookmyer, not to mention his two beautiful grandchildren, Gregory and Timothy Klein.

A Celebration of Ben’s life will be held November 14, 2010 from 1 to 5 PM at Hopeland Farm, at 253 Elser Hill Road in Brickerville, near Lititz, Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Lancaster County PO Box 4125 Lancaster, PA 17604.  Thank you. Dear Mary,
Chip and I want to extend our sympathy to you and your family for the loss of Ben.  The video is so touching, and he was a legacy in Lancaster.  I will always remember skiing at Meadow Valley and Rocky Springs.  Ben knew my dad, George Vlassis, my dad owned the old Wonder Bar when it was a nice place to eat a burger and have steamed clams, I remember seeing and meeting Ben there. May his memory be eternal. We know that Chad is honored to help you and your family with your requests. Thank  you for using our service. We are honored.
Thank you,
Chip and Doreen Snyder

While it sorrows me to write at this time, for this reason, I’ll forever feel grateful that knowing Ben has added something to my life. We rented a building that housed our business for ten years. Ben will always be remembered by us as the wise and kind-hearted man that he truly was.

Mary and family ,

We are sorry to hear about Ben’s passing. Our son Bill was the care taker at Rocky Springs for a while. This was their first place that they lived with our granddaughter . Glenn has rented the shop from Ben for quite some time now . (Multi Two Electric) and still does. If we can do anything for you please let us know.

To The Ben Brookmyer family,
Although i haven’t seen any of you for probably 40+ years, I was saddened to learn of Ben’s passing.  I do remember family get togethers when we grew up and i think the last time i saw Ben was at the ski shop in Lancaster.  My condolences to you and all the family,
Sincerely,

Dear Mary and family,
I am sorry to hear of Ben’s passing.  Many times I have wondered how you were doing.  I had lost contact but thought with great fondness of our "adventure" together as we tore down the "Wildcat"  and then built your deck.  It was a lot of hard work but what a hoot we had working with you.  I still have a copy of the video that you gave me with Ben thoroughly enjoying himself.  What a special man!

You all have our condolences.

Paul Brosey (Conoy Contractors)

Dear Brookmyer Family,

To the Brookmyer family:
It was with great sorrow that I learned of Ben’s recent passing. We were first cousins, and although our paths did not cross often in later years, in our youth we did share many happy times together, especially at family dinners and at his parent’s cottage on the Pequea creek. I will be in Wisconsin on November 14 visiting my son and family, so will not be able to attend the memorial service. I extend my sincere sympathy to all your family, knowing the sadness that comes with the loss of a loved one, as I did last year with the passing of my wife.
Sincerely,
H.S.(Sid) Long

Mary,
Our sincere sympathy to you and family.  You truly have lost your soulmate but Ben will be with you forever in your heart and in your memories!  What a whirlwind of 38 years you were fortunate to enjoy together!!

My sympathies go out to the family.  I had the pleasure of working at Rocky Springs Park as an EMT when it first opened.  Ben was very kind to all the workers at the park.  His passion and visions for the park made all of us excited.  It was a fun time.  He was a unique person and I am glad to have known him.  Thom Colson’s tribute brought tears to my eyes, as it will for others.  Life’s a long song, but the tune ends too soon for us all. Ben has to be the most kind and intelligent man I have ever met in my life. If I could achieve even a fraction of what he accomplished in his seventy eight years, I could consider my life to be completely successful. The world needs more people like Ben – unfortunately a man so incredibly kind, caring and grateful of everything around him is incredibly rare in this day and age.

Ben did so much good for everyone around him. He will be missed by all – but we will all remember the times that Ben brightened our day. He always had a way of doing just that.
