Areti Hazangeles, 74

March 03, 2019

Areti Hazangeles, 74, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Sunday, March 3rd, 2019. She was born in the village of Kalloni, on the Island of Lesvos, Greece and was the daughter of the late Haralambos and Evangelia (Azadelis) Vougamalis. She arrived in the United States in 1963 to attend college at St. Basil’s Academy, Garrison, NY.
She is survived by her loving husband, Peter (Paschalis) Hazangeles and they recently celebrated their golden anniversary of 50 years of marriage.
The center of Areti’s world was her Church, The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, where she was involved in several different organizations. She participated in her beloved weekly bible study for over 35 years. She was a member of the Philoptochos Society, The Daughters of Penelope, The Pan-Coen Society, and The Greek Language School, where she served in many different leadership roles.

Areti and Pete were the original founders of the well-known House of Pizza Restaurants in Millersville (1968) and downtown Lancaster (1986).

Areti was an avid traveler, crocheter and knitter, gardener and hostess. She loved entertaining her family and friends and her home was typically the gathering spot for all to meet. She was also an amazing cook and baker. She had a vibrant personality that connected with all ages. Areti and her laughter and love for everyone was contagious and would light up the room.

Surviving in addition to her husband, are three children; son, John P. Hazangeles, husband of Monica Jeffries-Hazangeles, Silver Spring, MD, two daughters, Angel Lee (Angie), wife of Steve Aslanidis, Millersville, Christina A., wife of Peter Kokolis, Williamsburg, VA, five grandchildren, Ava, Krystian, Noelle, Aretoula, and James. She is also survived by three sisters, Marika, wife of Anthony Krallis, Reading, Mersini Iliadis, Millersville, and Niki, wife of Haralambos Agadellis, of Kalloni, Lesvos, Greece and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, March 7, 2019 at 10:30AM at The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church 64 Hershey Ave. Lancaster, PA 17603 with her great nephew, The Rev. Hector Firoglanis officiating. Viewings will be held at the Church Wednesday evening from 6PM-8PM with a Trisagion Service at 7:30PM, and again on Thursday morning from 9AM-10:30AM. Interment will be in Conestoga Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Areti’s memory to The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church.

Our deepest condolences on the passing of Thea Areti! She was a pillar of our community, leading with her example. None more powerful than her example of worship. Her dedication to our Lord was a huge inspiration, attending every service, knowing every hymn (even if they were sung but once a year) and not just being there, but praising with all of her heart! Thank you for sharing her with us, we are all better for it and thank God for her wonderful impact on us. She had a way of making everyone she saw feeling loved, feel special and it was clear that it always came from the heart! Our love and prayers are with you all. May her memory be eternal and everlasting.

Thea Areti was a phenomenon.. she lit up a room, brought laughter and warmth to everyone she spoke to with her smile and embrace. Having grown up with John, Angie and Christina, our moms were always helping and present for church activities which we were involved. She was an encourager to all children. As adults, she continued to call us the endearing “honey” or “sweetie” whenever she saw us as she asked about our parents and families.  During church functions such as the bazaar, March 25th programs and performances, she would beam at the children and be the most passionate audience member clapping and smiling from ear to ear. I know this kind of mother leaves an enormous void in her family’s life.  She also, however, leaves an amazing sense of pride, legacy, and love that will comfort and be talked about for many many years. May her memory be eternal! Thinking of all of you during this difficult time.
