Albert J. Schreder, DDS, 90

February 20, 2018

Albert J. Schreder, DDS, 90, of Lancaster, passed away Tuesday, February 20, 2018, after suffering a stroke on Thanksgiving Day 2017. He was the son of the late John B. and Rosina Krallinger Schreder. He was married to Ave Marie Butz Schreder for 53 years until her passing September 8, 2008.

He grew up on Cabbage Hill in Lancaster, and graduated from Lancaster Catholic High School in 1945, the University of Notre Dame in 1949, and the Temple University School of Dentistry in 1953. Al had a private dental practice with his brother, and best friend, John, until he retired in 1993. He worked very hard all of his life to benefit others.

A lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, he was past president of the Holy Name Society and St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Al loved athletics, and played basketball and baseball for the IX Corps during his service in the Army from 1945-1946 in Sendai, Japan. After graduating from dental school, he served for the U.S. Public Health Service in Chicago, and during that time he played basketball with the U.S. Marine Corps.

An avid golfer, Al, was a 35-year member of the Lancaster Country Club. He was proud of his many golf accomplishments, including three holes in one, shooting his age numerous times, and his 1979 Lancaster County Senior Championship. Al also won the Senior Club Championship in 1984 and the Shaub Cup in 1986 at LCC.

He was especially passionate about the University of Notre Dame. Al was a proud member of the Notre Dame Club of Harrisburg and served as its president from 1995-1996, and started the Notre Dame Club of Harrisburg Scholarship Fund. He was also a University of Notre Dame Alumni Senator from1993-1996.

Al is survived by his brother, John, of Lancaster; his five children, Susan Petrak, wife of Dr. Russell of Chicago, Dr. Thomas Schreder, husband of Antionette Sabatine of Lancaster, Dr. Gregory Schreder, husband of Bonnie MacKenzie of Lancaster, Carole Pasquini, wife of Vincent of Hershey, and David Schreder of Lancaster; eight grandchildren, Allison Mullen, wife of Jay, Stephen, and Robert Petrak, MacKenzie, Amber, and Brett Schreder, and Vincent and Nicholas Pasquini; and two great-grandchildren, Kinley and Conor Mullen.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place 11 AM Monday, February 26, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 440 St. Joseph Street, Lancaster, PA 17603 with Rev. Philip G. Burger as Celebrant. Viewings will be held from 2 to 4 PM Sunday, Feb. 25th at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543 and on Monday from 10-11 AM at the church. Interment will follow in St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery.

Dr. Al specifically requested no flowers please. As a man who loved to “give back” he requests that you make a donation to Lancaster Catholic High School, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster, PA 17601 or to St. Anne’s Retirement Community, 3952 Columbia Ave., Columbia, PA 17512 or your favorite charity.

The entire extended family is in our prayers.  What a great man!  His name evokes fond memories everytime I hear it.  His warm laugh rings in my ears.  I can’t remember a time he greeted me that I did not feel loved.  Kevin Gluntz and family.

Al was a trail blazer. The first Schreder, to graduate from Notre Dame and establish a trend. Among the first to earn a doctorate, along with his brother John, and enter a healing vocation. Al was my dentist for the duration of his practice. Al’s caring came from his heart and was not limited to my teeth and gums. Al’s love for ND, was an inspiration to my oldest brother Frank and I, who would follow Al and graduate from ND. Al and John were role models for my own vocational choice in earning a Ph.d. in the teaching and practice of psychotherapy. While our professional methods differ, we, each in our own way, engaged in the work of the lessening of suffering.
Al was like an older brother. We would argue ND football and politics by phone on a yearly basis. I will miss you Al. I imagine you lobying for the IRISH with all the GREATS from the entire ND Tradition.
REMEMBER Al, you are a now part of a larger ANCESTORAL TRADITION— The Communion of Saints.
Your GRATEFUL Cousin,
Dick Schreder

Al and Ave were also great hosts no matter how “crazy” we acted while visiting! He will be missed, but also fondly remembered.  Many thanks for everything he gave to us all.

Dear Greg and Bonnie,
We didn’t know you Father well but we enjoyed his company at dinner one evening. We watched basketball together and we saw the passion for sports and his ND team. Danny and I enjoyed hearing Greg tell colorful Al stories and some from you too Bonnie. We find it hard to express in words our sorrow for your loss of a dear Father. We send love and light to you and the family.
