Albert Greener, Jr., 88
April 07, 2017
Albert Greener, Jr. “Poppy,” 88, wore out on Friday, April 7th, 2017 at LGH. He was the husband to the late Betty Greener who passed away in 2008.
Al was the son of the late Albert Greener, Sr. and Beatrice (Lipus) Greener.
Poppy proudly served his country in the United States Army as an Alpha Engineer Specialist, 25th Division, 27th Regiment (Wolfhounds) against the Imperial forces of Japan. Poppy was within the first wave of occupation troops to hit mainland Japan in 1945. He saw the devastation effects of aerial firebombing and nuclear blasts that the Japanese government brought against the homeland of Japan.
Poppy was proudly employed at and retired from the School District of Lancaster after 37 years of service as chief engineer.
Poppy loved fishing, boating, crabbing, and just being around the water, especially the Chesapeake Bay either on a boat or on the shore. He spent almost every weekend there. Poppy loved eating steamed crabs and having a beer now and again. Poppy was a founding member of Rockfish Anglers Association of PA, a group of sport fisherman dedicated to halt (overly destructive) haul seine netting of breeding striped bass around the Susquehanna flats area in 1950’s and 60’s. A practice that has adversely affected (the current stock) of rockfish in the Chesapeake Bay.
Every Saturday, Poppy enjoyed dinning at the Oregon Dairy Restaurant where he loved the hot buffet and Bordeaux Cherry ice cream.
Poppy is survived by his loving son, Al Greener, of Lancaster, and a sister-in-law, Berti Hertz of Elizabethtown, PA. He was preceded in death by his son, Joseph Greener.
Special recognition goes to Rod & Doretta Gordon, and Nancy B., for their un-wavering support, love, and kindness. Also the staff at Oregon Dairy, especially Curvin H., and Elton H.
Family and friends will miss poppy terribly.
A service honoring the life of Poppy will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 10AM at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543. A time of visitation and sharing will be held at the funeral home from 9-10AM. Burial will immediately follow in Mellinger Mennonite Cemetery.

Al,
We are so sorry to hear about your dad passing. He was a neighborhood fixture. Always looking out for others. We always loved getting his tomato plants and some fresh fish! He is in heaven now, which must be a place with open waters and endless bait! May he rest in peace. Peace and strength to you always.
