Alan M. James, 77

October 31, 2024

Alan M. James, 77, died at home on October 31, 2024, in Lititz, PA, after a ten-month battle with cancer.

Alan was born in Chicago, IL, to the late Ralph E. James, Jr. and Nancy L. (Mackenzie) James. He attended Western Illinois University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and graduated with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mathematics in 1968. He received his Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from the University of Illinois Law School at Urbana-Champaign in 1975.

In 1969, Alan enlisted in the U.S. Army, was stationed at Fort Myer, VA, and worked at the Pentagon. He met the love of his life, Lois Horton, in Washington, DC after their mutual friends set them up on a blind date. He finished his two year enlistment attaining the rank of Specialist-5. He worked as an actuary at Horace Mann Insurance Company in Springfield, IL before and after the Army and then attended law school.

Alan and Lois married in 1972 at the Little Falls Presbyterian Church in Arlington, VA.

Alan spent his 45 year career working as a corporate law attorney for General Electric, Marsulex Environmental Technologies, Babcock and Wilcox, Office of Naval Research, and several other corporations in Chicago, IL, Canton, OH, Cincinnati, OH, Lebanon, PA, and international locations. He was known for his ability to work quickly and provide candid opinions.

Alan was a dedicated cyclist, typically riding 20+ miles per day, a voracious reader, and known for his unique sense of humor that kept his family laughing.

In addition to his parents, Alan was preceded in death by his sister, Leslie (James) Solberg.

He will be deeply missed by his wife of 52 years, Lois (Horton) James of Lititz, PA; his daughter, Stacy James of Wynnewood, PA; his son, Matthew James (Aileen Humphreys) of Vicenza, Italy; granddaughter Nea James of Vicenza, Italy; and many brothers- and sisters-in-law, nephews, and other family.
