Adela Monsalve de Madrigal, 91, of Leola, PA, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, December 13, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by eight of her nine children- Piedad, Jose Luciano and wife María, Cándida (Candy), Ramon, Patricia and husband Dana Kauffman, Diego, Pablo, and her beloved youngest, Claudia María. She also leaves behind five grandchildren- Jessica and husband Ben Lyman, Ryan Bair and wife Lexi, Jennifer, Ana Isabela, and Brandi and husband Anthony Peelor; nine great-grandchildren- Marlowe, Ramsay, Chandler, Prescott, Kynzlee, Huxley, Stellan, Kayce, and Logan; one brother, Alfonso Monsalve; one sister, Blanca Lia Monsalve; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, José Pablo Madrigal, her first daughter, María, and her four siblings, Jorge, Jesús Emilio (Suso), Marina, and Oscar.

Ana Adela Monsalve was born to Luciano Monsalve and Rosana Tobón in Bello, Antioquia, a suburb of Medellin, Colombia. Adela came to this world as the apple of her father’s eye. Her father was a well-known butcher in Bello, a man whose wealth came and went but whose love for Adela never wavered. Even after his death, Adela chose to honor his memory by naming her firstborn son, José Luciano, after him.

Adela’s love for her father could only be rivaled by her love for her beloved husband, José Pablo, with whom she was reunited in heaven just in time to celebrate their 69th wedding anniversary on December 15th. Their love story has been envied and adored by all who have heard it, the classic tale of a poor boy who falls in love with a rich girl, with nothing to give her but his love and his loyalty. And despite the disapproval of all her fellow socialites, Adela couldn’t help but fall for him too.

Jose P. and Adela’s partnership was unbreakable. After the tragic loss of their firstborn daughter, Maria, they persevered together to grow their beautiful family in Itagüí, Antioquia, until they were separated in 1971, when Jose came to the United States to work. Adela stayed behind and single-handedly cared for their seven children, all between the ages of 5 and 13, for three and a half years until they could all be reunited again in Lancaster, PA. After the move, they welcomed the final member of the Madrigal clan, their baby, Claudia. It is essential to recognize that Claudia has dedicated the better part of the last decade to caring for both Jose P. and Adela in the final stages of their lives, and the family could not have asked for a better person to lead the charge.

Adela was a seamstress by trade, though she is better remembered as a talented baker, whose wine-soaked Colombian wedding cakes sold for top dollar all year round. She was also an avid storyteller, and even without having learned English very well, she could communicate with almost anyone. As her family likes to joke, “out of 10 words, she knew three, she guessed three, and the other four didn’t matter.” She was the embodiment of where there is a will, there is a way.

Standing no taller than five feet, Adela’s presence commanded respect in any room she walked into. Though she was stern, as was needed to keep an orderly household, her kindness was renowned, and her smile could bring warmth to even the coldest of winter evenings.

A winter goodbye is fitting as Adela loved the holidays, and she always embodied the spirit of Christmas by sharing with those in need. Even in Colombia, her Christmas “novenas”, the nine days before Christmas, where families opened their homes to celebrate the coming of baby Jesus, were the most sought after; and her gifts to the children of the town were always the most generous, as she knew it might be the only gift they would be getting that year. She was a devout Catholic, and even in her final weeks, she held fast to the prayers she had known all her life. May God and the Virgin Mary be with her now and always, and may her soul rest in eternal peace.

A viewing will be held at Snyder Funeral Home on Sunday, December 21, 2025, from 4-6 pm. There will be a second, shorter viewing at Our Lady of Lourdes church at 10 am on Monday, December 22nd, followed by the funeral mass at 11 am. Ana Adela Monsalve nació en Bello, Antioquia, hija de Luciano Monsalve y Rosana Tobón. Adela entró en este mundo como la niña de los ojos de su padre, Luciano. El carnicero más conocido de Bello, la riqueza vino y se fue, pero el amor por su hija nunca falló. Después de su muerte, Adela eligió honrarlo poniéndole el nombre de José Luciano a su primer hijo varón.

Solo un amor pudo competir con el amor que Adela le tuvo a su padre — el amor de su querido esposo José Pablo, con quien se reunió en el cielo justo a tiempo de celebrar 69 años de casados el día 15 de diciembre. Su historia de amor ha sido envidiada y admirada por quienes la han escuchado — un cuento clásico de un muchacho pobre que se enamora de una joven rica, con nada más para ofrecerle que su amor y su lealtad. Y contra los consejos de sus amigas de la alta sociedad, Adela no pudo evitar enamorarse de él también.

La unión entre José Pablo y Adela era infalible. Después de la pérdida trágica de su primera hija, María, perseveraron juntos para crecer su linda familia en Itagüí, Antioquia, hasta que fueron separados en 1971, cuando José Pablo se fue a trabajar a los Estados Unidos. Adela se quedó en Colombia cuidando sola de sus siete hijos, todos entre las edades de 5 y 13, por tres años y medio hasta que pudieron reunirse todos en Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Después de la mudanza, dieron la bienvenida al ser que completaría la familia Madrigal, la niña Claudia. Es esencial reconocer que Claudia ha pasado la mayor parte de la última década cuidando de sus padres, y la familia no podría haber elegido una mejor persona para hacerse cargo.

Adela fue una costurera de profesión, pero fue más conocida por su don en la cocina, especialmente por la torta y los bizcochos que vendía para las bodas durante todo el año. Le encantaba contar historias, y aunque nunca aprendió bien el inglés, se comunicaba con cualquier persona que le dirigiera la palabra. Como su familia bromea, “de cada 10 palabras, se sabía tres, adivinaba tres y las otras cuatro no importaban”. Ella fue la encarnación de la frase “querer es poder”.

Adela no medía más que un metro y medio, pero su presencia imponía respeto en cualquier lugar en que entraba. Aunque solía ser austera de actitud, que fue necesaria para mantener el orden en casa, su bondad siempre sobresalía, y su sonrisa podía calentar hasta las noches más frías del invierno.

Una despedida invernal es especial, porque a Adela le encantaban las Navidades y siempre compartía el espíritu navideño con los más necesitados. Hasta en Colombia, sus novenas fueron las más procuradas, y sus regalos para los niños del barrio los más generosos, porque sabía que tal vez sería el único regalo que recibirían ese año. Adela fue devota a la iglesia y se aferró a sus oraciones al Señor hasta en sus últimos momentos. Que Dios y la Virgen la acompañen hoy y siempre, y que su alma descanse en la paz eterna.

El primer velorio será en Syder Funeral Home el domingo, 21 de diciembre de 2025 desde las 16 a 18 h. También se celebrará otro velorio y una misa fúnebre en la parroquia Our Lady of Lourdes el lunes, 22 de diciembre de 2025 a las 10 h y 11 h, respectivamente.
