Edward Louis Burton
Edward Louis Burton of 900 Sheaffer Rd. Lancaster, died of natural causes on November 23, 2007. Born in 1924, he grew up in Monterey California, the youngest son of Manual and Edna Mae Baker Burton. A veteran of World War II, Ed served six years in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Cabot in the Pacific Theater.
In 1945, the USS Cabot won the 3rd Division Basketball Championship. Ed went on to become the Captain of the All Navy Basketball Team. After the Navy, Ed received numerous basketball scholarships. He attended and played at LaSalle and Lafayette Universities, graduating from Lafayette University. Later the All Navy Basketball team of which Ed captained was honored and inducted into the the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
Ed was an avid golfer. He was a Club Professional at White Marsh Country Club. He later became Club Champion of Media Heights, Indian Spring and Overlook in the 1970’s. Ed was a passionate instructor of golf until his last few years.
Ed was employed by Irl Daffin and Associates, as well, Ed owned and operated a driving range and golf center in Bainbridge, Pa. Ed was a life long member of the Roman Catholic Church.
He was the beloved father and is survived by his children: Karen Lynne of Philadelphia, Harold Sheaffer of Winona Lakes IN, Elizabeth Duffy Johnson of Lititz, Mary Duffy Sheaffer of Brentwood, California and Edward Custis of Lancaster. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; Owen J. O’Connell, James H. Burton, Michael S. Burton, Katherine L. Burton, Christie C. Johnson, Taylor S. Johnson, Savannah K. Burton, Bethany R. Burton and Tyler R. Burton.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, November 29, 2007 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 119 S. Prince St. Lancaster, at 10AM. with Fr. Leo Goodman as Celebrant. Interment will be in Woodward Hill Cemetery. The Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home and Chapel, Inc. Lititz 560-5100 will be handling the arrangements.
