Paul Santo Mongiovi

Paul Santo Mongiovi, of Lancaster, passed away on September 21, 2006 in his 59th year.

Born on March 1, 1948 in Lancaster, Pa., Paul was the son of the late Angelo and Josephine (Renda) Mongiovi.

Paul attended St. Joseph’s School in Lancaster and is a 1966 graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School.  After high school, he spent two years as a U.S. Army Staff Sergeant at Fort Gordon, Ga., during the Vietnam Conflict.  Following his military service, Paul graduated from Elizabethtown College in 1973 with a BS in Business Administration.  He continued his education throughout his career by obtaining various professional certifications.

Paul began his professional career with National Central Bank, then Hamilton Bank, which was acquired by CoreStates.  He served in a number of commercial lending capacities.  He was with CoreStates-Hamilton Bank for 22 years and at the time of his departure was Vice President and Manager of Credit Review.

In 1997 Paul joined Susquehanna Bancshares, Inc., where he was well respected for his knowledge and work ethic.  He was employed there for 8 years as Director of Credit Review.  In this position he was instrumental in creating a common credit process for multiple community banks.  His leadership and interpersonal skills were key components to the successful operation of the multi-bank credit review function.

He was professional, enthusiastic, and dedicated to performing his job to the point of perfection.  He acted as a mentor and friend to his staff allowing independence but providing support when necessary. He fostered a workplace environment that was fair, professional, and always full of spirit and good humor.

Paul was also an ardent sports enthusiast.  He was an avid Penn State football fan and for ten years he was a coach for the Roherstown Little League.  His greatest sports pleasure however, was attending the events in which his sons participated.  He never missed a game.

After his diagnosis with brain cancer, Paul became active in the Brain Tumor Community Group.  Here he received support and provided support to other brain tumor patients.  He enjoyed the long walks he took most days with neighbors and family.  He cherished the time he could spend with family and friends, especially his grandchildren.

Paul is survived by his wife of 36 years, Julie (Long) Mongiovi.  In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons, David C. Mongiovi, husband of Barbara (Schilling) Mongiovi, and Mark A. Mongiovi; two grandchildren, Tyler and Kayla Mongiovi; two brothers, John Mongiovi, husband of Concetta, and Frank Mongiovi, husband of Frances; and many nieces and nephews.
