Fred Ward Horner, 81

Fred Ward Horner, 81, of Lancaster, died Monday, January 23, 2006 at Village Vista Manor.  He was under the care of Hospice of Lancaster County for the past 2 months.

Born in Centre County on February 26, 1924, he was the son of the late Fred Wesley and Margaretta Catherine Rockey Horner.

Fred served in the Army as an automatic rifleman in the 8^th Division in the European Theatre and was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge and 2 campaign stars (1946).

He married Edna Marie Bartch of Mount Joy on November 18, 1951, and later moved to Lancaster where he worked at Penn dairies and the Lancaster County Prison.  Eventually he also worked as a security guard at ITT Grinnell for many years until he retired.

Fred and his wife married for 52 years when she died on May 28, 2004.  His wife cared for him at home prior to his residing at Village Vista Manor.

In earlier years, Fred and his wife were members of a bowling league at Leisure Lanes.  For many years, he also enjoyed hunting deer with his son in the State College area.  In addition to hunting, he enjoyed cooking, gardening, playing cards, and taping favorite movies.

He is survived by two daughters, Paula A., married to John M. West of Lancaster, Sherry L., married to Alan J. Sommerville of Halifax, and a son, Barry Lee Horner of Lancaster; and he has grandchildren.

He has two sisters, Lois Addleman of Centre Hall, Martha Horner of State College, and a brother, William Horner, also of State College, and has many nieces and nephews in the State College area.

He was preceded in death by 3 sisters, 1 brother, also a son, Fred William, and his wife, Edna Marie.

A memorial service will be held at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home Inc., 441 N. George St., Millersville, PA on Friday, February 10, 2006 at 2PM.  Friends will be received at the funeral home on Friday from 1:30 until the time of service.  Interment in Mt.
