Leon R. Matthews, 73, of Lancaster, PA, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 30, 2026, at Lancaster General Hospital.
Born in Lakewood, New Jersey, Leon was the son of the late Joyce (Kennett) Matthews and Leon B. Matthews. A proud New Jersey native, Leon dedicated much of his life to service and community, most notably as Chief of the Lakewood Fire Department, a role he carried with honor, leadership, and deep commitment to those he served.
Leon was the beloved husband of Lenore “Lori” Matthews, with whom he shared more than 53 years of marriage. Their life together was built on love, partnership, and countless shared memories.
A skilled mechanic by trade, Leon had a lifelong passion for cars. He especially enjoyed attending car shows in Carlisle and Hershey, browsing car flea markets, and talking shop with fellow enthusiasts. He also loved traveling and took great joy in seeing new places with Lori by his side.
Leon was an avid Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles fan, faithfully cheering on his teams through every season.
Family meant everything to Leon. He is survived by his wife, Lenore “Lori” Matthews; his daughter, Joyce, wife of Jeremy Cassel; his sister, Diann Testagrossa, wife of Vito, of Florida; his brother-in-law, George Reynolds; and his sister-in-law, Barbara Burns, wife of Art. He is also lovingly remembered by his many nieces and nephews.
Leon was a devoted dog dad to Winnie and Mack, and a proud “grandpup” grandfather to Eevee and Clifford. He was preceded in death by his cherished dog, Zia, who held a special place in his heart.
Leon will be remembered for his dedication to service, his mechanical skill, his love of cars and sports, and most of all, his unwavering devotion to his family. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
