Donald R. Geiter, Sr., 86
September 14, 2025
Donald R. Geiter, Sr., 86, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 14, 2025. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joyce, who passed away in 2020. Don and Joyce shared nearly 60 years of marriage together.
Born in Lancaster City’s 7th Ward, Don was the son of the late Sherman and Margaret (Waitz) Geiter. He is survived by his six children: Gere L. Huyck (Fred), Lori A. Williams, Donna R. Houck (David), Debra A. Haldeman (Frank), Brenda L. Sokso (John), and Donald R. Geiter, Jr. (Laura). He was a proud grandfather to 16 grandchildren (including Matthew (Brittany), who shared a special bond with his “Pap”) and many great-grandchildren, all of whom lovingly called him “Pappy.” Don is also survived by his sisters, Shirley E. Schreiner, Joyce J. Shifflett, and Betty A. Herr. He was preceded in death by his siblings, M. Ruth Greiner, Charles H. “Todd” Geiter, Sherman C. “Jim” Geiter, Jr., K. Jane Imhoff, and Alverna M. Knier.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Don found his greatest joy in family. He was also a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in occupied Germany after World War II, following in the footsteps of his father, a World War I veteran, and his older brothers, both World War II veterans. He especially cherished the appreciation he received from others in the community whenever he wore his U.S. Army veteran hat.
A graduate of J.P. McCaskey High School, Don embodied loyalty and hard work. A proud URW/USW union member, he spent nearly 40 years as a powerhouse machinist at Kerr Glass, missing only a handful of workdays across his entire career. Known for his warm hospitality and his love of beer (especially Budweiser and any German brew), Don treasured time with family and friends. His legendary summer cookouts and festive Christmas Eve gatherings became beloved traditions. He was also an active member of Lancaster VFW Post 1690 and participated in other veterans service organizations throughout his life.
Don was a man of Christian faith, which he renewed and reaffirmed in the weeks leading up to his passing.
Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
