Jay Clarence Garber, 92
August 31, 2025
Jay Clarence Garber, 92, of Lancaster, was led gently home on August 31, 2025. Born in Lancaster County, he was the son of the late J. Clarence and E. Vera (Herr) Garber. He was married 71 years on August 5th to his beloved wife Lois Anna (Leaman) Garber.
He lived on Spring Lawn Farm since he was 3 where he enjoyed dairy farming for 20 years. Jay received his bachelor’s in sociology from Millersville University in 1974. He was a social worker and human resource director for Philhaven Hospital for 17 years, and human resource for Eastern Mennonite Missions for 7 years. Jay was also the lead Pastor for New Danville Mennonite Church from 1966-1998, where he was a lifelong member. He served on various boards, including the EMM board for 34 years, 15 of those as chair. Jay and Lois traveled to over 50 countries; many trips were mission related. He was always interested in people and learning new things. They enjoyed daily and occasional long bike rides, skiing, supporting fundraisers, and most importantly, praying for their family and friends.
In addition to Lois, Jay is survived by 4 children: Judy Zook (Ron), Joe Garber (Yvonne Leaman), Dave Garber (Shirley Saner), and Elaine Ostrum (Ed); 15 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, daughter-in-law Nancy Albrecht (Chuck), and sister Ruth Rohrer. He was predeceased by his son, Fred Garber, and sisters: Marian Leaman, Ann Garber, and Jean Huang.
Although Jay is no longer with us, his life will continue to impact others through the testimony of his faithful obedience to Christ Jesus and by helping medical research and education by donating his body to the Humanity Gifts Registry.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at 3 PM at New Danville Mennonite Church, 103 Marticville Rd, Lancaster, PA 17603.
