Dr. Bernard “Bernie” Jacobson, 97
May 06, 2025
Dr. Bernard “Bernie” Jacobson, 97, of Lititz, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, scholarship, and justice. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Bernie was the son of the late Max and Baylah Jacobson.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, Bernie served with honor during World War II. Following his service, he pursued his love of learning, earning degrees from Case Western Reserve University and later obtaining both his Master’s and Doctorate in Mathematics from Michigan State University.
Bernie devoted 38 years of his life to teaching at Franklin & Marshall College, where he inspired generations of students with both his intellect and compassion. A beloved professor, he remained in touch with many former students long after their graduation and eventually teaching their children and grandchildren.
An advocate for equality, Bernie was deeply involved in the Civil Rights Movement and played an instrumental role in the desegregation of public swimming pools in Lancaster County. He was an active member of the ACLU and the Lancaster County Democratic Party, where his thoughtful voice was consistently one of reason and progress.
As the third Jewish professor at Franklin & Marshall, Bernie helped establish the Hillel chapter on campus, creating a space for Jewish students to connect and celebrate their heritage. He was a lifetime supporter of Israel and many Jewish organizations, always working to strengthen the Jewish community.
Known for his forward-thinking views and calm, steady presence, Bernie was an avid reader and a lifelong fan of Cleveland’s sports teams, cheering on the Browns and the Guardians (formerly the Indians) any chance he could.
Bernie is survived by his daughter Sharon Randazzo and her husband Chris, his grandson Nathaniel and wife Isabella, and his dear friend Connie Brown. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years, Ethel C. Jacobson, his son Barry F. Jacobson, and grandson Nicholas Randazzo.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 9, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Spacht-Snyder Family Funeral Home & Crematory, 127 S. Broad Street, Lititz, PA 17543. Bernie will be laid to rest at Shaarai Shomayim Cemetery following the service.
