Barbara Ruth Johnson Hurnyak

March 04, 2025

Barbara Ruth Johnson Hurnyak, affectionately known as Babs, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2025, in Willow Street, PA. She was born on February 12, 1952, in New York, NY, and grew up in Stony Brook, NY, with her parents, Lois and Paul Johnson, her older brother Arthur, and younger sister Carol.

Barbara attended school in the Three Village School District and was in the first graduating class of Ward Melville High School in 1969. She continued her education at King’s College and later earned her associate degree from Adelphi University.

Barbara spent many years working for the Suffolk County Attorney’s Office before moving to Lancaster, PA, in 1994, where she began her long and fulfilling career at Millersville University. There, she became a cherished member of the community, known for her kindness, humor, and ability to connect people. She remained a beloved presence at the university until her retirement in 2023.

Babs was a fountain of information on just about anything, with a deep passion for history—especially the lore and legends of the Three Village area on Long Island. She was an avid foodie, knowing every restaurant in town, and she loved nothing more than a “dinner and a movie” with friends. A firm believer in retail therapy, she had a signature style—bold accessories, bright colors, and an even brighter personality.

Above all, Babs was known for her unwavering kindness. Described by her peers as a “connector,” she was responsible for bringing many friendships—and even marriages—together within the Millersville community. Her caring, upbeat spirit made her unforgettable to everyone she met.

She is survived by her son & daughter in law, Eric & Carol, grand daughter, Alexa and her siblings Arthur and Carol.

When faced with the biggest challenge of her life—a Glioblastoma diagnosis—Babs met it with grace, poise, kindness, and positivity. She never complained or asked, “Why me?” Instead, she faced it all with quiet strength, always asking what she could do for others. She was an inspiration to many and will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Condolences to the Family

Barbara was a gem! She loved people and made everyone feel important and accepted.  During her stay in health care I noticed the frequent visits from her family despite the long trip from Long island.  You can be very proud of the way you supported your Mom.

Barbara was a force of nature whose bubbly personality, big smile and laugh never failed to brighten the day of anyone she came into contact with.  You couldn’t help but be drawn to her and she made it her mission to get to know us all.  She will be missed by so many, but all of us carry a part of Barbara with us everyday because once you met her, she became part of your heart.  Watch over us all Babs.

Barbara changed the course of my life with her wonderful quality for seeing you for your strengths as well as your needs.  She always did her best to make sure everyone she knew was surrounded by those who would love them.  I have no problem picturing her re-organizing Heaven do that everyone is with the best group of people for them to thrive!  Love you Barb.

All I can say is the Library will never be the same again. Your door was always open if I had a question or even just to chit-chat.  And I just loved your sense of humor and your style. I miss you.
