Born in Newark, NJ, she was the daughter of Henry and Myrtle Hoppe and the wife of David G. Hughes for 56 years.

Mary Ann was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where she volunteered in the Nursery, attended the Women’s Bible Study, sang in the choir, helped care for the cemetery garden, and was the song leader for the Good News Club at Nitrauer School.

In the past, she served as a Sunday School teacher, Pioneer Girls leader, on the board of Concerned Persons for Adoption, and was the newsletter editor for Mothers of Twins of Essex County, NJ. In retirement in Speculator, she ran the Craft Shop at Camp of the Woods for ten years where she also regularly volunteered. In addition, she was a member of the Garden Club and volunteered at the TWIGS Treasures Thrift Shop.

Mary Ann’s hobbies included sewing, quilting, crocheting, counted cross stitch, gardening, scrapbooking and cross-country skiing.

Mary Ann was my cousin.  We enjoyed Seaside together as children.  Mary Ann was always generous and loving.  Mary Ann made great peanut butter sandwiches for us, even though Grandmother Jacobina complained that Mary Ann put too much peanut butter on my sandwich.  Throughout our lives, we were seperated by many miles, but I thought of her often.  At our last family get together, Mary Ann still gave me the choice delicasies and my wife Lori got to know my dear cousin, Mary Ann
It seems harder to be the one left behind, but I expect to see her smiling again, happy somewhere in Heaven.

What a blessing Mary Ann was to veryone in her life.  She was a wonderful aunt and a great example of Godly love.  Later on in her life she gave me some great advice on dealing with my children: never forget to show love at all times; she then went on (husband) Dave and I did this and our kids turned out pretty good!
My condolences Michelle and Dave on your loss.

Hello, this is Michelle, MaryAnn’s daughter. A bunch of MaryAnn’s family members have decided to write our memories of MaryAnn and her husband/my father/David Hughes, on this tribute page. My brother and I read long sweet eulogies at Mom’s memorial service. We ALL love her and Dad dearly. Please forgive us if the memories we write here are are unique to the flavor of what others are saying. 🙂
Mom was passionate about a lot of things – even things she shouldn’t be passionate about…..she was strong willed. My Dad had a term for when she would blurt out something strongly worded – “Bombastic Statements”. And they often were. 🙂 In her inner circle, Mom was famous for these. 🙂
I recall in 6th grade I tried out for a play and she was not pleased with who got the lead female part (a 5th grader), so she wrote a letter to the teacher in charge of the theatre club, giving him a hard time for his choice of the lead part. This did not go down well with the teacher in charge (my teacher!)  and he gave a defensive angry lecture about it!

When I was in high school and going on a long trip on the church bus, my Mom insisted I take a container of yogurt with me. I made it clear I did not want to transport it. She would not take “no” for an answer so, against my wishes, I wound up taking it with me in my handbag on the bus. It would up opening in my handbag and I had a mess of yogurt to content with!
Aa a remembrance about my Dad, since he was laid to rest with Mom, he used to say with a big smile that he was the head of the household but his wife was The Boss! My parents had an excellent marriage. She was a real servant to him. At his request when he was in rehab, she was sneaking in alcohol to him in approximately 2018. She put it in a tall thermos sippy cup that looked innocent but it contained contraband. She was battling some dementia at that point, even though she hadn’t been diagnosed with it, so we can’t know whether or not she knew she shouldn’t be bringing it in or not. One thing she knew is that he asked her to bring it in and she did. 🙂

We were sorry to hear of cousin Mary’s passing. Grew up together with other cousins when little girls. I remember my mother made Mary and me and my sister Linda matching summer night gowns. We all spent Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays together. Other times during the year too depending on school and parents work schedules. She holds a special place in my heart.💕   Nancy Malone

I am so sorry to hear this news, and my condolences to Mary Ann’s family. I have such fond memories of growing up with Mary Ann and David at Grace Presbyterian Church in Montclair, NJ, and I remember both David and Mary Ann’s parents well. Mary Ann had such a servant’s heart and love for the Lord, and had a gift of helping wherever it was needed. It was a joy to reconnect with them when I moved back to New Jersey years later, and also when I would visit Speculator, NY.  Praying the Lord wraps His big comforting arms around you in your grief, even as you envision her now in the very presence of God.

Sorry to hear of the passing of Mary Ann. We knew her well from Speculator where we attended the same church, sang in Mt. Arts chorus, volunteering at the food pantry and of course at COTW. She always had a smile and kind word for everyone. Our sincere condolences to the family.
