Caroline E. Radesky, Ph.D, 38
October 25, 2024
Caroline E. Radesky, 38, of Lititz, PA, passed away unexpectedly at her residence on October 25, 2024.
Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of Joseph A. Radesky of Lititz and Debra Bertzfield Desormeaux of Louisiana. A graduate of Warwick High School, she earned a BA in history and womens studies from Dickinson College, and both her Masters and Doctorate in history from the University of Iowa.
Caroline had a deep love for history since she was a teenager, working at Landis Valley Museum as a guide and presenter at the age of 14. She took that calling and became a professor, teaching history and womens studies for four years at the University of Iowa, followed by Harvard University and most recently at Simmons University in Boston.
She loved antiquing, and spending time with her friends, cooking for them and entertaining, and she enjoyed nature, going on walks and drives to enjoy the outdoors.
In addition to her parents, Caroline is survived by her brother, Jonathon Radesky of New Orleans, her aunts: Mary Fisher and Fran Baxter; her uncles: Ray, Ed, Tony, and Andy Radesky and by many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A private gathering to celebrate Carolines life will be held at a future date at the convenience of the family.

As a Museum Educator at Landis Valley Museum for the past thirty years, it is with genuine fondness that I recall Caroline’s early years volunteering at the museum. As a high school student, few of which had her fervor for the past, she embodied the idea that “history is not was, history is.” Her passion, inquisitiveness, joyful nature and desire to share the history, heritage and values of the Pennsylvania German culture, was superlative. Often, Caroline would stop by the museum simply to update the staff on her most recent accomplishments and keep us posted on up-to-date information. My sincerest condolences to the family. She will be in my prayers. I will miss her. Timothy Essig.

I was so sad to hear of Dr. Radesky’s passing. I currently had her for my History class at CSM. She was a wonderful professor. She was always very helpful and full of life. I am glad I was able to get the short time with her as my professor. Thoughts and prayers to her family. She will be missed greatly.

I was heartbroken to learn the news. As a former student of hers, she was the best professor I ever had at Simmons. She truly cared for her students and inspired my learning of history to a great extent. I would not be the student I am today without her. Her passion for history was contagious. There was so much left for me to learn from her. Her impact on her students will never be forgotten. She is greatly missed.- Ella Potter

So saddened to hear this news. But it was a joy to work with Caroline during her time at Dickinson College, when I was also on the history faculty there before moving to Arizona. I had the privilege to work with her closely one-on-one for her senior thesis, and I always found her to be an exceptionally engaging, intelligent, and dedicated historical researcher. She was a model of combining professional collegiality with intellectual autonomy and independence. I am immensely proud that she pursued her love of history through to the PhD and had the opportunity to inspire students through her own teaching. — Jeremy Vetter, University of Arizona

I write on behalf of the Humanities Department at Simmons University to express our sincere condolences to her family and friends. In the short time that she was with us as Assistant Teaching Professor of History, Caroline impressed us with her brilliance as a scholar, her dedication as an educator, her talents as a teacher, and her kindness of spirit. She will be greatly missed by her colleagues and her students at Simmons! Wanda Torres Gregory, Professor and Chair of the Simmons University Humanities Department

Such a tragic loss! I am a student of Dr. Radesky’s and though the semester was short I admired her unwavering kindness and attention to students, on the first day of class as we did introductions she responded to each persons fun fact with a connection to her life or a follow up question and i found it so beautiful and it showed how much she really cared for her students! She will be greatly missed here at Simmons.

This is heartbreaking. I mentored Caroline many years ago when she was an undergraduate. She was curious, engaged, and had a beautiful mind. A terrible tragedy. I’m so, so sorry to all who loved her. She was indeed a dear one.

I write as the History Department Chair at Dickinson College. On behalf of my colleagues who knew and had the great pleasure to know Caroline, we were greatly saddened to hear of her passing. She was the best of what we hope for in our students: a kind, compassionate, empathetic, curious, and unbelievably intelligent and skilled person. That she chose to continue in to academia was a great honor for us to see her walking a similar path to ours, trying to educate and inspire the next generation. Caroline will be missed, but she will also be remembered by all of us who got to see her grow into such a talented historian.
Our deepest condolensces.

It was a joy to know Caroline as a teenager and see her grow into her role as a historian. She left us far too early.

I am so sorry to hear about Caroline’s passing. I am a former Volunteer Coordinator at Landis Valley Museum and hired Caroline as a volunteer in the Youth Program. She had a great love of history and was more engaged and knowledgeable than most students her age. I am gratified to know that in her role as a youth history volunteer Caroline found her life’s work. My sincere condolences to Caroline’s family.

Oh how I wish we’d had more time together. I was just laughing the other day and telling the story about how we used to give your Barbie dolls updos like Patsy from AbFab. I’ll especially remember very fondly how you were the very first person to meet my first boyfriend and were so welcoming and kind to him. You had such a kind soul. And while we might not have always gotten along, you always were and always will be my little sister, and I will always love you!
