Barbara Jean Dorsey, 81
August 04, 2024
Barbara Jean Dorsey, formerly Stewart, passed away at home on Sunday, August 4, 2024. She was born the third of six children to parents Eric E. and Willetta E. Stewart (Foster) on January 31, 1943.
Barbara was a 1960 graduate of JP McCaskey High School. Before retiring, she worked as a Service Representative for Bell Telephone. She was an active and dedicated member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she enjoyed volunteering and spending time with her church family.
Barbara found great joy in a variety of hobbies, including knitting, reading, and tending to her beloved flowers. Her green thumb was well-known among her friends and family, and she took great pride in caring for her plants. Barbara also had a passion for genealogy, dedicating time to tracing her family history and connecting with her roots. Additionally, she loved trivia, always eager to learn new facts and challenge herself.
Barbara was a proud member of the African American Historical Society of Central Pennsylvania, where she contributed to preserving and celebrating African American heritage and history. Late in life, she developed a keen interest in the Gullah Geechee people of the Southeastern United States and dreamed of tracing her ancestry to the enslaved Western and Central Africans. Though she never realized this dream, she marveled at the possibility of one day walking in the footsteps of those who came before her.
Barbara listed her greatest accomplishments as the birth of her daughter Allyson and the birth of her grandson Alex
Barbara is survived by her daughter, Allyson Hershock (Hudgins), wife of Robert, of Lancaster; her grandson, Alex Hudgins-Bowman, companion of Roselynn, of Lancaster, who affectionately referred to her as Ninny (pronounced NeeNee); her sister, Marian L. Ford of Columbia; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her siblings: Carol Branch, Michael Jackson, Eric F. Stewart, and Joe Jackson.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 31 S. Duke Street, Lancaster, PA 17602. Family and friends will be received from 10 AM until the time of service. A private interment will follow in the church Memorial Garden.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania at www.aahsscpa.org.

Dear Allyson,
The family was sorry to hear of the passing of your mother, our cousin Barb. We know that her presence and her joyous laugh will be missed. Unfortunately I was not able to attend the service but I know she was honored and remembered for her generosity and for her work in tracing the ancestry of our people.
Much Love,
Cousin Mary Bair, cousin Cassandra Bair Mimidis, & family

Allyson, you had a wonderful Mother who I grew fond of through the years. When she spoke of you I could feel the love of a caring and proud Mother. May you gain strength during this time and in the days to come. I will certainly miss Barbara Dorsey. I am grateful for her welcoming me as an “outsider” when I first met her. Later, she was there for me during my late husband’s illness and after he passed. Her genuine concern and caring attitude will always be remembered. Barbarba is now resting and sharing all those “good stories she told me about with her siblings and other family members! She definitely “loved family”! Thanks, Barbara!!

Dear Allyson,
I remember when you worked at LGH & Penny Segro & I would meet you for dinner & your Mom came in to join us along with your precious little one, Alex. We always had a good time. We enjoyed the interaction we all had , she really was a terrific grandmother to your Alex . I did see your Mom a couple of years ago , a couple of times , at the Giant Grocery Store, she spotted me & we started talking, it was like we picked up from where we left off. I love that when that happens & we were friends on FaceBook. She took some pretty nature pictures. Prayers & Sympathy to you & your family from Linda Swearingen [ Lila’s Mom ] Blessings in the special memories , Cherish those times & as time goes on, more will come to mind .

It was a blessing to have Barbara as a member of Holy Trinity during the years I was one of the pastors there. She was faithful, positive and very caring, always involved in our serving ministries. She was an excellent mother for Allyson and a superb grandmother for Alex. She was very good steward of the gifts she was given, always using them to make others and the community better. She was a blessing to her church, her family, her community. She will be deeply missed. Pastor Dan Long

Aunt Barb as I called you in my adulthood, you were very much so matriarchal figure in my life. I know everytime you messaged me it was because you cared. And no matter how annoyed I was I always responded with love and respect. I may not have heeded your words but was always love and respect. If you could, give my grandfather Clarence and Nana Jean (Major) a hug for me. Love always, Michael Brown (Clarice’s Son).

I have Very Fond memories of Barbara. My Family moved to Lancaster, PA from VA in 1955, Barbara was the the Very Person who befriended me. Our Friensdhip has lasted through High School – and many years after. I have since moved back to Virginia, but we stayed in touch – always chatting on our respective birthdays. I Will miss her. I was shocked to read of Barb’s passing. She was always so joyful and spunky. I knew her way back when she was working in a law firm where I was a paralegal. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family. She will be missed!
