David G. Schwalm, 74

December 26, 1949 - May 22, 2024

It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of David G. Schwalm, born in Pottsville, PA on December 26, 1949, and called to eternal rest on May 22, 2024, surrounded by his loving family at home. David was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Marjorie (Madenford) Schwalm for over 52 years.

A man of faith, David was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Wernersville and dedicated his time to serving as a council member and Sunday School teacher. His quick wit, sense of humor, and boundless generosity touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. David had a career in grocery and retail management. From toy stores to grocery stores, to outlet stores, David managed from a place of respect for his customers and colleagues.

Throughout his life, David’s dedication to his community shone brightly as he selflessly served as the original chairman of the Strawberry Festival and actively contributed his time and talent to various causes such as tutoring with the Lancaster Literacy Council. He was an integral part of the Mt. Joy Library Game Night and found immense joy in mentoring young minds of the Young Gentlemen’s Club at Burrowes Elementary alongside his son.

With a zest for life and a passion for learning, David pursued his education, earning a Bachelor’s Degree from Susquehanna University and was a member of the Phi Mu Delta Fraternity. Beyond his professional endeavors, David was known for his love of literature, travel, and hosting engaging game nights and thrilling murder mystery parties that brought friends and family together.

David is survived by his wife Marjorie; children, Peter R. Schwalm, husband of Stefanie of Shillington, Ann E. (Schwalm) Pilarte, wife of Gustavo Pilarte of Lititz, and Thomas D. Schwalm, husband of Lori Ann of Sinking Spring; the grandchildren who affectionately called him “D”, Peighton R. Schwalm, Beatrice M. Pilarte, Sebastian D. Pilarte, Bryce T. Schwalm, Samanta L. Schwalm, Reid H. Schwalm, Quinn H. Schwalm, and Peter E. Schwalm; siblings, Sheri Galloway, and Scott Hoffman; and a brother-in-law, Michael Burke; nieces, Dawn (Burke) Royle and Lindsay (Madenford) Beyler, and nephew Jeff Burke. He was preceded in passing by his parents Harry W. Schwalm Jr. and Fern K. Schwalm, step-father, Carl Hoffman, a sister, Nancy Burke, and a sister-in-law, Melissa Madenford Gibson.

A funeral service honoring David’s life and legacy will be at 12 PM on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 130 S. Walnut St. Wernersville, PA 19565. The family will greet guests at the church from 11 AM until the service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Community Care.

My roommate, fraternity brother and friend from our first day at Susquehanna Univ., sharing many laughs and good times for over 56 years. Dave introduced me to Pa. Dutch food and Yuengling beer, for which i am eternally grateful. Loved his dry sense of humor and ability to laugh at himself–and me. R.I.P. brother.  Flip San Filippo

We’ll always remember David for his great sense of humor (we still retell some of his best dad jokes) openness to new experiences and people, and his love of family and community. He will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed.
