Claire Etter Martin, 66

February 25, 2024

Claire Etter Martin, 66, of Washington Boro, passed away after a brief illness on February 25, 2024. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Ronald and Carol (Waller) Etter. She was married over 45 years to her beloved husband, Jeffrey L. Martin.

Claire graduated from Hempfield High School in 1975, where she was an undefeated long-distance runner on the track team. She attended Millersville University where she worked many years as an office manager. Claire was known for her love of animals and the outdoors. She also authored articles for EDN Inc. (Eastern Delaware Nation), was a member of Green Hill United Methodist Church, a gifted piano player and volunteer for her church and for ORCA in Lancaster. Claire absolutely loved going to the beach, especially their annual trips to Stone Harbor. She also enjoyed visiting their cabin in the woods in northern PA. Her family affectionately remembers her love of ice cream, zest for life, and warm personality that she shared with everyone.

In addition to her husband Jeff, she is survived by her 2 sons: Kevin Martin (Kim) and Michael Martin (Rebecca), sister Phyllis Stroh (Dave), and 4 grandchildren: Lexie (Mark), Ryan, Abigail, and Faith. She was predeceased by her sister Karen Reese.

Family and friends are invited to gather from 10-11 AM on Monday, March 4, 2024 at Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 441 N. George St. Millersville, PA 17551. A service will begin at 11 AM with interment to follow at Millersville Mennonite Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in Claire’s name to ORCA, 401 E Orange St, Lancaster, PA 17602.

I am so sad and sorry to hear this news. Claire was a mainstay at the APSCUF-MU office, and was an institution. I always felt that we were in good hands with her running the office. She was also truly kind and helpful.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time. She was a very devoted caregiver to many family members and a dear friend to faculty and staff members at Millersville university.

Claire’s memory is still clear to me from the years we worked together to start up the Washington Boro Cub Scout pack.  What a great person to know and share good times with! And what a positive influence on those boys, now grown and with children of their own.  She was a blessing in many lives. Dave Stadden

I am so sorry that Claire had to leave us so soon: she was such a positive person and one always felt better for having spent time with her. My time at Millersville as an APSCUF and APSCURF member is invariably linked with memories of Claire: she always knew what to do and did it gladly. May she rest in peace on “the heavenly beach.” Her memory is certainly a blessing. I accompany you in your sadness and loss.

I am so sorry to learn that Claire is no longer with us. I appreciated her work with our faculty union! I knew I could count on her institutional memory and integrity. I learned a lot about her from the beautifully written obituary. I hope the family knows how much we respected Claire at Millersville.
